A press release which was issued and personally signed by Chinwe Agams, an attorney at law, human rights activist, pro-democracy advocate and social worker confirms that her NGO, which is a community based organization known as Women’s Crisis Centre WCC, Owerri, was awarded a USD50, 000 grant from Open Society Institute for West Africa OSIWA, to lead grassroots response to the covid19 pandemic in Umuaka. According to the press release, which a copy of it was made available to Umuaka Times, \u201cthe grant is meant to build women’s resilience to covid19\u2019s economic impact, support Umuaka Community Hospital to conduct household awareness,\u00a0 education & screening for underlying health conditions like diabetes and HBP.<\/p>\n

From the findings made by Umuaka Times, the WCC recently conducted an audit of health care facilities in Umuaka & distributed NCDC clinical guidelines printed by New Umuaka Project Initiative, another community based organization in Umuaka. Umuaka Times gathered that WCC will continue to distribute NCDC guidelines & posters in the community as the pandemic lasts..<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s Crisis Centre was founded by Chinwe Agams in 2002 to lead a community approach to eliminate violence against women in Nigeria. As part of the current pandemic response program, the organization will work with Umuaka to create systems to eliminate violence against women through education, mediation & reporting.<\/p>\n

The press statement also hinted that the program will be implemented in phases over the next 2 years. Phase 1 will be implemented over the next 6 months. WCC will be approaching cultural & civic leaders in order to build formidable alliances and achieve its target. Chinwe Agams also appealed to Umuaka people through Umuaka Times for proper cooperation during the implementation of the OSIWA funded program.<\/p>\n

A close-up on Chinwe reveals that she is the first daughter of Dr. Ginikanwa Agams, son of Agamekwe Agwubuo in Duruezikeoha, Uba. Dr. Agams passed away to be with his ancestors in 2011. Chinwe Agams, who is also known as Lesley Gene Agams, is a barrister & solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989. She is an Abuja based writer. For more than 30 years, Chinwe\u00a0 Agams has worked in women\u2019s rights, international development & the nonprofit sector.She rose to the position of International Non-Governmental Organization, INGO\u2019s country director before leaving the nonprofit sector a few years ago. Lesley Agams has been pursuing her passion for writing & justice since then.<\/p>\n

Chinwe Agans grew up in Umuaka and went to secondary school and University in Imo State. She grew up listening to stories of community solidarity, self help & developments, in a family with a strong history of public service going back centuries.<\/p>\n

Chinwe was the convener of\u00a0 #NGWomen4Peace, a coalition of women and women-led organizations from all across Nigeria demanding greater participation of women in national and local peace building & conflict resolution efforts, and de-escalation by Federal Government & armed groups in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
