High profile Akalite, US based immigration lawyer and the principal consultant, Nnaka& Associates PLLCA Dr. Kenneth Nnaka, has called on governors in the Southeast region to to immediately and without delay enact laws criminalizing the use and installation of the EzeNdi Igbo title in the diaspora. Nnaka made this call following the recent developments in South Africa and Ghana concerning the international embarrassment such installations generated. Justifying his advocacy, Dr Kenneth Nnaka went further and described the phenomenon as growing abuse of Igbo cultural heritage as well as an inpersonation.<\/p>\n

Nnaka who made the call in an exclusive interview with Umuaka Times correspondents in the United States argued that the proliferation of self-styled traditional rulers outside Igboland undermines the authenticity of the institution, stressing that \u201cthere can never be two kings in a kingdom.\u201d According to him, the practice distorts long-standing traditions and creates confusion about legitimate authority within Igbo society.<\/p>\n

The high profile attorney and philanthropist further warned Ndi Igbo living abroad to desist from adopting such titles, describing the trend as a misuse of cultural identity. Instead, he recommended that leaders of Igbo communities in the diaspora adopt more appropriate designations such as \u201coverall Igbo leader\u201d or \u201cPresident-General of Ndi Igbo,\u201d which, he said, better reflects the organizational and non-traditional nature of diaspora leadership.<\/p>\n

Nnaka\u2019s position aligns with a growing body of criticism surrounding the concept of Eze Ndi Igbo in the diaspora, which has generated debate among scholars, community leaders and diasporans.<\/p>\n

The attorney while responding to one of the questions from Umuaka Times highlighted several concerns, including legitimacy issues, noting that many Igbo communities are traditionally republican and do not recognize centralized kingship, particularly outside ancestral lands. \u201cWithout a defined territorial base or traditional backing, diaspora kingship is often seen as lacking cultural authenticity,\u201d Nnaka told Umuaka Times.<\/p>\n

From Umuaka Times investigations with regards to the recent development in South Africa, there are also fears of cultural misrepresentation, as some diaspora leaders may unintentionally simplify or alter customs to fit foreign environments, thereby presenting a uniform Igbo identity that overlooks internal diversity of Ndi Igbo.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the emergence of multiple \u201cEzes\u201d within the same city or country has led to leadership conflicts, with disputes over recognition and authority sometimes dividing communities rather than uniting them. In an exclusive interview Chief Marcel Duru (SAN) had with Umuaka Times about 4 years ago, the Kano based SAN disclosed that the number of royal fathers in Imo State alone is more than the number of royal fathers in the whole of Northern Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Umuaka Times has it on good authority that observers have also raised concerns about the commercialization of traditional titles, alleging that some are conferred based on wealth or social influence rather than merit or service, which could erode respect for Igbo institutions.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, diaspora Ezes are often said to have limited authority, lacking the political or judicial powers traditionally associated with rulers in Igbo land, making their roles largely symbolic. Many diasporanezes are not even chiefs in their ancestral communities in Igboland.<\/p>\n

The existence of parallel leadership systems launched by diasporanezendi Igbo has also contributed to the fragmentation of Igbo organizations, sometimes putting diaspora ezes at odds with established town unions and cultural associations.<\/p>\n

Despite these concerns, some supporters argue that diaspora ezes play valuable roles in promoting Igbo culture, mediating disputes, and fostering community cohesion abroad.<\/p>\n

However, Nnaka insists that preserving the integrity of Igbo tradition requires clear boundaries, urging policymakers and community leaders to rethink how cultural institutions are represented outside their place of origin.<\/p>\n
