Fear is beginning to ripple across Nigeria once again as fresh concerns emerge over the possible return of the Coronavirus, widely known as COVID-19, following a newly confirmed case in Cross River State.<\/p>\n

Umuaka Times gathered that the Cross River State Government last week officially confirmed a fresh COVID-19 infection, a development that has stirred anxiety among residents and rekindled memories of the devastating global pandemic. While authorities insist the situation is under control, the psychological impact on citizens is already evident, with many Nigerians worried about a potential resurgence.<\/p>\n

Reacting in Calabar, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry EgbeAyuk, disclosed that the case involves a 53-year-old Chinese expatriate who arrived in Nigeria through Lagos on March 17, 2026, before traveling to a factory in Akamkpa Local Government Area. It was there that symptoms were first noticed.<\/p>\n

The patient, who initially showed mild symptoms, was referred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where tests later confirmed the infection. According to Ayuk, the individual is currently receiving treatment at the state\u2019s designated isolation centre and is responding well.<\/p>\n

Despite assurances from the government that there is no cause for panic, many Nigerians remain uneasy. The memories of lockdowns, economic hardship, and loss of lives during previous waves of the pandemic continue to fuel public concern.<\/p>\n

Health authorities explained that the announcement was delayed until all diagnostic procedures were completed to prevent misinformation and unnecessary alarm. The state has since activated emergency response measures, including contact tracing and isolation protocols, to contain any possible spread.<\/p>\n

State Epidemiologist, Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong, noted that this is the first officially recorded COVID-19 case in Cross River since 2022. She emphasized that even a single confirmed case qualifies as an outbreak, prompting the immediate activation of the Emergency Operations Centre and deployment of rapid response teams.<\/p>\n

She added that identified contacts are being monitored daily within the virus\u2019s incubation period of two to 14 days, warning that many cases may go undetected due to mild symptoms that resemble malaria, such as fever, cough, and sore throat.<\/p>\n

As uncertainty grows, public health experts are urging Nigerians to return to basic preventive measures that proved effective in the past such as maintaining regular hand hygiene by washing hands frequently or using alcohol-based sanitizers.<\/p>\n

Wear face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, practice social distancing where possible and avoiding close contact with individuals showing flu-like symptoms.<\/p>\n

Seek medical attention promptly if symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing occur. Stay informed through verified health authorities and avoid spreading unverified information.<\/p>\n

At this critical moment, the responsibility of government at all levels becomes even more crucial. Authorities must strengthen disease surveillance and testing capacity nationwide. Ensure transparency and timely communication to prevent panic and misinformation. Equip hospitals and isolation centres with necessary resources. Reintroduce public health awareness campaigns across media platforms. Collaborate with international health bodies to monitor global trends and responses.<\/p>\n

While there is no official declaration of a new wave, the situation serves as a stark reminder that COVID-19 has not been completely eradicated. Vigilance, preparedness, and collective responsibility will determine how Nigeria navigates this renewed threat.
