I was still lying on my bed, wrapped in the heaviness of dawn, staring at the ceiling as the phone continued to ring insistently beside me. Outside, the world was still dark and quiet, but inside me, fear had already awakened. Ever since insecurity tightened its grip on Umuaka, early morning calls from home had become messengers of dread and bad nes for me. They no longer sounded ordinary; they carried the weight of uncertainty, the possibility of tragedy, and the fear that another familiar name had fallen victim to the harshness of life back home.

For a few seconds, I stared at the glowing screen without touching it. My heart pounded heavily against my chest as if it already knew what my mind was unwilling to accept. The caller was Paschal Okechukwu Onwukwe, my younger brother. Seeing his name at that strange hour only deepened my anxiety. I managed to hold myself before answering, trying to steady my trembling fingers. Somewhere within me, one particular fear rose above every other thought. It was the same fear that had haunted me for days as news of Nwegeh’s illness filtered quietly among family and friends.

The moment I picked the call, I did not bother with greetings or pleasantries. My voice came out weak, almost pleading, as though I was begging heaven to reverse whatever answer was waiting for me.

“Elu… how is Nwegeh?”

There was a brief silence on the other end. It was the kind of silence that says everything before words are spoken. Then Paschal answered softly, painfully, like a man carrying a burden too heavy for his voice.

“We lost him some hours ago.

Chaii! At that moment, time froze around me. The room suddenly felt empty, cold, and unfamiliar. I could hear nothing else after those words. It was as though the entire world had gone still in respect for a fallen giant. My phone slipped slightly from my hand as I struggled to breathe through the shock.

Nwegeh is gone? The fearless man whose voice echoed for the poor, the downtrodden, and the forgotten had fallen silent forever. Dear God what a world! Memories flooded my mind in uncontrollable waves. I remembered his laughter, loud and genuine, the kind that made people around him feel alive especially whenever he sand for them. I remembered his stubborn courage, his refusal to look away when others were suffering. Nwegeh was not just another man from Umuaka; he was a force of nature. Orphaned at a tender age, he had fought his way through hardship with determination that inspired everyone who knew him. From the dusty roads of home to the disciplined life of the United States military, from classrooms in Harvard and George Washington University to gatherings with ordinary villagers, he carried himself with uncommon dignity and compassion.

What hurt the most was knowing that he died when his people needed him desperately. In a community wounded by insecurity, fear, and uncertainty, Nwegeh remained one of the few voices people trusted completely who refused to go on exile like others. He spoke boldly when others were afraid. He defended the weak when many chose silence. He had returned home not to seek comfort, but to stand with his people during difficult times. And now, in the quiet darkness of that February morning, the light he carried had suddenly gone out.

I remained seated on my bed long after the call ended, unable to move, unable to cry, unable to fully accept what I had just heard. Dawn slowly crept through my window, but the morning brought no joy. Somewhere far away in Umuaka, people were waking up to another ordinary day, unaware that one of their strongest sons had taken his final breath only hours earlier. And there I was, holding my silent phone, realizing that some telephone calls do not merely wake a man from sleep, they wake him into grief he may never completely recover from.

The passing of Lt. Captain Vitalis Nnamdi Nwanyanwu, fondly known as Nwegeh, on February 19, 2026, has left a deep wound in the hearts of all who knew him. His departure, after a brief illness, marked the end of a remarkable journey defined by courage, sacrifice, intellect, and uncommon compassion. As his burial rites began on May 27, 2026, family, friends, and admirers gathered not only to mourn a man, but to celebrate a life that stood firmly for justice, humanity, and hope. His death came at a time when his community needed his wisdom, strength, and voice the most.

Born in Umuawaha Umuezikoha Uba Umuaka and orphaned at a very tender age, Chief Nwanyanwu understood pain long before he understood privilege. Yet, rather than surrender to hardship, he confronted it with fierce determination and resilience. Through personal struggle and relentless perseverance, he liberated himself from poverty and social backwardness, becoming a symbol of triumph over adversity. Those who knew him closely called him Nwegeh, a name spoken with affection, respect, and admiration. His life story was a testimony that greatness can rise even from the harshest beginnings.

The Atakata Agbuo was a proud United States military veteran, who dedicated part of his life to service, discipline, and honor. Beyond the battlefield, he distinguished himself academically, earning recognition as an accomplished scholar who studied at Harvard University, the University of Lagos, and George Washington University. His brilliance was matched only by his humility. Though he achieved global exposure and spent many years in the United States, he chose to return home to Nigeria, where he spent his final days among his people, embracing the land and culture he loved deeply.

Chief Vitalis Nwanyanwu was not a man consumed by status or social class. Instead, he deliberately identified with the poor and downtrodden, standing boldly beside those who had no voice. He spoke for the oppressed, defended the weak, and at times physically fought for justice when others turned away. He believed that leadership meant service, and that true honour came from lifting others. In a world increasingly defined by self-interest, Nwegeh remained fiercely committed to humanity, earning the love of ordinary people who saw in him a rare and genuine protector.

Beyond his public achievements, he was a lover of community, and football. He found joy not in power or luxury, but in the laughter and companionship of everyday people. Whether sharing stories among friends, discussing the future of his community, or cheering passionately for a football match, he carried aura that drew people to him naturally. His simplicity, generosity, and deep emotional connection to people made him unforgettable. He was a bridge between intellect and humanity, between strength and compassion.

Today, as his remains rest in the mortuary of eternal glory, the world mourns a soldier, scholar, activist, and beloved son of the soil who is survived by his two daughters, his brother Osita Unachukwu, and a wide circle of family members, friends, and loved ones who will continue to cherish his memory and preserve his legacy. Though Lt. Captain Vitalis Nnamdi Nwanyanwu has departed this earthly life, the impact of his courage, kindness, and service will endure for generations. Nwegeh may be gone, but his voice will continue to echo in the hearts of the people he fought for and loved so dearly.

Rest in peace nwanwa ukwu.

[2
1121

Nwegeh: The Resilience of a Restless Fighter.
