C. Onyeche filtered into the various WhatsApp platforms of High School Umuaka (formerly St. Saviour’s College Umuaka) alumni across the world, disbelief gave way to grief. It was not merely the death of a retired school principal; it was the passing of an institution, a builder of lives, a moral compass, and a father figure to generations of students. As one Umuaka Times reporter simply captured the mood, “When we heard the news, the heartbeat of High School Umuaka stopped.”

At the remarkable age of 90, Chief Onyeche remained mentally alert and intellectually vibrant. Former students who visited him in recent years were often amazed that he could still recognize many of them by name, recalling memories that had spanned over four decades. Just over a year ago, delegations from various alumni sets visited him to celebrate his life and thank him for the sacrifices he made in shaping their destinies. Unknown to them, those visits would become treasured final moments with the man they fondly called “GC.”

As tributes poured in from Nigeria, Europe, Australia, and the United States, a common thread emerged: Chief Onyeche was more than an educator. He was a visionary who transformed lives through discipline, integrity, excellence, and genuine love for young people. The lawyers, doctors, engineers, journalists, soldiers, diplomats, professors, royal fathers, businessmen, clergy, and public servants who once sat under his tutelage unanimously agreed that whatever they have become today owes much to the values he instilled in them.

Former Senior Prefect Class of 83 and former Chairman of Njaba Local Government Area, Hon. Bon Nnaka, described him as an exceptional teacher, polished grammarian, and uncompromising disciplinarian whose eloquent speeches during morning assemblies became unforgettable lessons in leadership and public speaking. According to him, Chief Onyeche’s mastery of language inspired confidence in countless students, while his remarkable memory remained intact until his final days.

For HRH Eze Charles Emeka Anyakudo, Ezearo III of Ekwe Ancient Kingdom, the late principal successfully managed the destinies of young people entrusted to him. The monarch noted that many of those boys under his watch eventually rose to become accomplished professionals and even traditional rulers. He pledged that the various alumni associations would ensure that Chief Onyeche’s enduring legacy remains preserved for future generations.

Members of the Class of 1983 also reflected on the unique style of administration that distinguished Chief Onyeche. Mr. Chris Ughabugo recalled how he introduced academic streaming based on merit and personally intervened to secure the release of his classmates’ WAEC results when they were withheld. The class also celebrated his 90th birthday alongside members of the 1981 set, an occasion that has now become even more precious.

Perhaps no tribute better illustrated Chief Onyeche’s compassionate heart than the story shared by Atlanta-based attorney, Dr. Chris Nwachukwu. He recounted how the late EzeBoniface Egwuogu of Uloano once revealed that after gaining admission into the University of Calabar in 1979, his family could not afford transportation or school expenses. Upon learning of the situation, Chief Onyeche personally drove the young student to Calabar in his Peugeot 504 and assured him that lack of money would never stand in the way of his education; a promise he faithfully fulfilled. To many, this single act captured the generosity and fatherly spirit that defined the man.

Professor Emeka Duruigbo of the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in the United States described Chief Onyeche as the model principal whose dignity, wit, intellect, and integrity transformed every morning assembly into a classroom of life. Veteran banker and administrator Dr. Austin Agbahiwe remembered him as a legend who used discipline not to intimidate but to produce responsible and successful adults. Australian-based legal practitioner High Chief EddysonAnugoh(UgwumbaAmurieOmanze) called him an iconic educator whose influence extended far beyond the classroom, while Captain CrisOgueriChidomere, President of the Unique ’85 Association, remembered him as a mentor whose disciplined approach prepared boys for adulthood.

Echoing similar sentiments, UK based attorney, Chief OkeySekeseOjinnaka, Dr. Chief Perry Ekwunazu, Mr. Chigozie Dike, and many others described him as a principled educator whose teachings continue to shape their lives. Chigozie Dike recalled that when news broke of Chief Onyeche’s transfer from High School Umuaka to Government College Owerri, many students openly wept as though they had lost a family member. It was perhaps the clearest testimony to the depth of affection hidden beneath the fear his discipline once inspired.

Engineer Emmanuel Igbokwuwe perhaps summarized Chief Onyeche’s virtues best, describing him as a man characterized by eloquence, vision, generational leadership, uncompromising principles, proven integrity, inspiration, modesty, humility, empowerment, and respectfulness. In his words, “His legacy is enduring, unwavering, and will transcend generations.”

As Executive Chairman of the HSU ’82 Set, Engr. Sir Vice Onyemepu reflected on a courtesy visit made to their beloved principal on 11 June 2025, looking back, he expressed gratitude that the alumni had the opportunity to thank him while he was still alive. What once seemed like an ordinary reunion has now become one of the most cherished moments in the history of the class.

Chief (Sir) G. C. Onyeche’s remarkable career took him from Government College Umuahia to St. Saviour’s College Umuaka and later Government College Owerri, where he consistently upheld standards of academic excellence and moral discipline. At a time when examination malpractice has become a troubling concern in many schools, his former students remember him as a principal who insisted that success could only be earned through diligence, honesty, and character. Under his watch, Umuaka Times gathered that High School Umuaka became one of the most respected centres of academic excellence in Eastern Nigeria, producing graduates whose achievements continue to bring honour to the institution. His “children whom he nurtured at High School include highly established lawyers, professors, royal fathers, engineers, successful diplomats, businessmen, journalists, medical doctors and many more.

Those who passed through his classrooms remember more than lessons in History or English;they remember the unforgettable morning assemblies where words such as “apparently,” “hitherto,” and countless memorable expressions became part of their vocabulary. They remember a leader who demanded excellence because he believed every child possessed the potential for greatness. Above all, they remember a father who cared as deeply for the future of his students as he did for his own children.

Although Chief Sir G. C. Onyeche has now answered the final call of his Creator, his influence remains alive in the thousands of lives he molded across generations. His classroom may be empty, his office silent, and the familiar voice from the assembly ground no longer heard, but his teachings continue to echo in courtrooms, hospitals, boardrooms, classrooms, churches, palaces, military formations, and communities around the world where his former students now serve.

Indeed, while death has taken the man, it has not diminished the legacy. High School Umuaka has lost a principal, but history has gained one of its finest educators. His story will continue to be told wherever discipline, integrity, excellence, and selfless service are celebrated.

Onyeche was more than what his students thought he was!

21 ViewsWhen the news of the passing of Chief Sir G.
