A renowned infectious disease physician and native of Isiozi Umuaka in Imo State, Dr. Gertie Chimeka Anyanwoke, has been elected President of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), one of the largest professional organizations of Nigerian healthcare practitioners in the diaspora. Dr. Anyanwoke assumed office as President for the 2026\u20132028 term, succeeding Dr. Clifford (Cliff) Eke, who served as the association’s president from 2024 to 2026.<\/p>\n

Information made available to Umuaka Times correspondents in the United States indicated that Dr. Anyanwoke was elected during ANPA’s 32nd Annual Scientific Convention and General Assembly, held from June 3 to June 6, 2026, in Oak Brook, Illinois.<\/p>\n

A highly accomplished physician, Dr. Anyanwoke holds the professional qualifications of Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA) and Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).<\/p>\n

Umuaka Times gathered that before assuming the presidency, she served as ANPA President-Elect from 2024 to 2026, during which she played a leading role in coordinating the association’s continuing medical education programs, medical missions, public health initiatives and strategic organizational development.<\/p>\n

ANPA is a nonprofit professional body representing more than 4,000 physicians, dentists and allied healthcare professionals of Nigerian origin across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. The association is dedicated to advancing medical education, promoting public health, conducting medical missions and strengthening healthcare partnerships between the diaspora and Nigeria.<\/p>\n

A graduate of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Dr. Anyanwoke completed her internship and residency training at New York Medical College before undertaking fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at the North Shore University\/Long Island Jewish Health System\u2013New York University Medicine Program. She is board-certified in Infectious Diseases and has built an outstanding career in clinical medicine, healthcare leadership and global health advocacy.<\/p>\n

She currently serves as Medical Director of Infectious Disease Associates of Baton Rouge and the Baton Rouge Multi-Specialty Care Center in Louisiana, where she is recognized for her commitment to clinical excellence, compassionate patient care and innovative healthcare leadership.<\/p>\n

Within ANPA, Dr. Anyanwoke has held several key leadership positions over the years, including Treasurer, Chair of the ANPA Louisiana Chapter, Chair of the National Infectious Disease Committee, President-Elect and now President. Her contributions became particularly significant during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, when she championed infectious disease education, public health awareness and collaboration among physicians across North America and Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Beyond her medical career, Dr. Anyanwoke is widely respected for her humanitarian service, charitable medical outreaches, mentorship of young physicians, women’s leadership advocacy and commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in Nigeria and other underserved communities.<\/p>\n

In recognition of her distinguished achievements in medicine, humanitarian service and community development, the Isiozi Akah Autonomous Community in Imo State honoured her in 2024 with the traditional chieftaincy title “Ugo Mmuta I of Isiozi Akah.”<\/p>\n

As President of ANPA, Dr. Anyanwoke is expected to lead the association in advancing its vision of harnessing the expertise of Nigerian physicians in the diaspora to improve healthcare through education, research, advocacy, medical missions and sustainable partnerships that benefit communities across Africa and the Americas.<\/p>\n

Her election has been widely welcomed by members of the Nigerian medical community and Akalites who view it as a significant milestone not only for ANPA but also for the Umuaka community, whose daughter continues to distinguish herself on the global stage.<\/p>\n
