An international public health consultant based in Canada, Dr. C-fine Okorochukwu, has raised concerns over the growing incidence of kidney failures in Southeast Nigeria and urged men and women aged 50 and above to take regular and comprehensive medical examinations seriously.<\/p>\n

Dr. Okorochukwu made the call during a medical discussion organized on Klubb88, an online platform for former students of High School Umuaka who graduated in 1988. Speaking to members of the group, the public health consultant who is also a member of the group, stressed the importance of preventive healthcare, particularly as people enter their 50s and beyond.<\/p>\n

According to him, the human body can be likened to a machine whose performance and resilience gradually decline with age, making regular medical assessments increasingly important.He therefore advised members of the group, all of whom are now aged 50 and above, not to wait until they develop symptoms before seeking medical attention.<\/p>\n

Dr. Okorochukwu recommended that people aged 50 and above discuss a number of basic medical examinations with their physicians and consider having them performed regularly. Among the tests he highlighted are: Blood sugar level, HbA1c test, which provides an indication of average blood glucose levels over time, liver function test, kidney function test, cardiological assessment, including ECG and echocardiogram (ECHO) and cardiac markers where medically indicated. Others include colonoscopy or appropriate colorectal cancer screening, prostate examination for men.<\/p>\n

The doctor emphasized that the recommended examinations should not be interpreted as a one-size-fits-all prescription, noting that individuals should consult their family physicians or other qualified healthcare professionals to determine which tests are appropriate for them.<\/p>\n

For women, Dr. Okorochukwu recommended additional attention to breast and cervical health. He specifically mentioned mammography for breast cancer screening and cervical screening involving a Pap smear and HPV testing, depending on age, previous screening history and medical advice. He also mentioned abdominal ultrasound, MRI and CT scans, stressing that these examinations should generally be undertaken when a doctor identifies a specific need based on a patient’s history, symptoms or physical examination.<\/p>\n

Advising further, the doctor disclosed that liver and kidney function tests and other investigations should be guided by the findings of a person’s family physician. The consultant’s intervention comes amid growing concerns about kidney disease and other chronic illnesses affecting older adults in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

For members of the Klubb88 community, the discussion provided an opportunity to reflect on the health challenges associated with ageing and the importance of early detection.<\/p>\n

Dr. Okorochukwu’s central message was that people should adopt a preventive rather than reactive approach to healthcare, particularly after the age of 50. He encouraged members of the group to maintain regular contact with qualified healthcare professionals and undergo appropriate screening based on their individual health profiles.<\/p>\n

The discussion also served as a reminder that reaching the age of 50 should be regarded not merely as a milestone but as an important stage for taking more deliberate responsibility for one’s health.<\/p>\n

Umuaka Times notes that screening recommendations vary according to age, sex, family history, previous medical conditions and individual risk factors. Tests such as CT scans, MRI, cardiac markers and colonoscopy should therefore be undertaken when recommended by a qualified healthcare professional rather than automatically performed every year.<\/p>\n
