Nwaeze, who is of the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, reportedly alleged that some professors at the university earn less than N400,000 (which is US$294.10) monthly. He also claimed that some commercial tricycle operators earn more per month than professors at the institution, a comparison that has generated discussion over the welfare and remuneration of academics in Nigerian universities.

Reacting to the publication, the management of ABSU suspended the lecturer, describing his social media posts as “inimical to the interests of the institution.” The suspension was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, and signed by ChijiokeNwogu, Public Relations Officer and Deputy Registrar of the university. The management also announced the constitution of an investigative panel to examine the matter. The development Umuaka Times gathered attracted reactions from Nigerians who have questioned whether expressing an opinion about the economic realities facing lecturers should warrant suspension from an academic institution. Some argued that the professor’s comparison, whether accurate or exaggerated, was intended to draw attention to what they described as the declining purchasing power and poor remuneration of academics.

Others said the university could have addressed the claims through facts and clarification rather than disciplinary action, particularly if the central issue was the accuracy of the salary figures presented by the lecturer. They maintained that an academic environment should encourage evidence-based debate, critical thinking and the freedom to question existing conditions.

The controversy has also raised questions about where institutions should draw the line between legitimate criticism and conduct considered damaging to an organization. Universities have a responsibility to protect their reputation and ensure that staff members do not make false or defamatory claims. At the same time, allegations concerning salaries, working conditions and the welfare of academic staff are matters of legitimate public interest, particularly in a country where university funding and lecturers’ welfare remain subjects of public debate. Observers argue that the best way to establish the truth of Nwaeze’s claims is through an open and evidence-based investigation. If the salary figures he cited are inaccurate, the university’s investigation could provide the facts and correct the record. If, however, the allegations are found to have merit, the controversy could draw attention to broader concerns about the financial welfare of academic staff and the conditions under which they work.

While universities have the right to discipline any staffer for proven misconduct, critics argue that such powers should not be used to discourage legitimate criticism or uncomfortable conversations about workers’ welfare. The controversy has therefore revived concerns about the limits of free expression within Nigerian public institutions and the extent to which employees can raise issues affecting their livelihoods without fear of disciplinary consequences.

Indications that emerged last week showed that the case has consequently become more than a disciplinary matter involving one lecturer. It raises a broader question about the ability of Nigerian institutions to tolerate uncomfortable criticism without interpreting it as hostility. In a democratic society, institutional strength is not demonstrated by the absence of criticism, but by the capacity to respond to criticism with facts, transparency and accountability.

The investigative panel constituted by ABSU is now expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s statements and whether they violated any university regulations. For many Nigerians, however, the bigger issue extends beyond Professor Nwaeze: whether institutions can protect their reputation while still allowing employees to speak openly about issues affecting their livelihoods and the wider society.

 85
