With more than 100 million records sold, approximately 3,000 songs to her name and a catalogue containing some of the most enduring compositions in American popular music, Parton became one of the most successful female artists of all time. Her famous songs included “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5,” “Here You Come Again” and “Love Is Like a Butterfly.” But behind the fame and fortune was the story of a child who grew up in one of the poorest families in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee in the United States of America.<\/p>\n
Dolly Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, near the Great Smoky Mountains. She was the fourth of 12 children born to Robert Lee Parton and Avie Lee Owens Parton. Her father worked as a farmer and labourer, while her mother cared for the large family. The family was extremely poor and lived in a small cabin. Paton later described her upbringing as “dirt poor,” but she also remembered a childhood filled with family, faith, music and storytelling.<\/p>\n
Umuaka Times correspondents in the United States disclosed that although the Parton family had little money, music was never far away from them, Dolly\u2019s mother sang and played guitar, while other relatives also performed music. According to Spotify data reported by Variety, Parton’s U.S. streams jumped by about 2,320% following news of her death. Another report from The Hollywood Reporter, citing Spotify data, put the overall increase at more than 1,200%, with \u201cJolene\u201d and \u201c9 to 5\u201d becoming her two most-streamed songs, reaching No. 2 and No. 3 respectively on Spotify’s U.S. daily songs chart. There was also a dramatic increase in digital sales. Forbes reported that within hours of her death being announced, more than 90 Dolly Parton songs appeared on the U.S. iTunes chart.<\/p>\n
