<\/p>\nNigeria has consolidated its position as the country with the highest number of private jets in Africa, with nearly 240 private jets currently operating within the country, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this at a recent event. Speaking in Montreal, Canada during a strategic engagement with aircraft manufacturers including Bombardier, Boeing, Airbus and Embraer, Keyamo said Nigeria\u2019s growing business aviation market represents \u201ca huge opportunity\u201d for the country\u2019s aviation sector.<\/p>\n
According to industry reports, the number of private jets in Nigeria has seen a sharp rise in recent years. The figure stood at just 100 in 2021, but has more than doubled despite current economic challenges. For context, Nigeria had only 44 private jets in 2005.Aviation authorities say about 70% of the jets operating in Nigeria is foreign-registered, while the rest are on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, register. An NCAA spokesman earlier explained that only 10 jets are privately owned and registered in Nigeria, while 67 others are foreign-registered. Officials note that many high-profile Nigerians register jets abroad to avoid levies and conceal ownership.<\/p>\n
While the exact number of Nigerian owners is not publicly available, estimates by the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, NIESV, put the number of privately-owned jets by Nigerians at about 200 as far back as 2013. Many Nigerians have continued to ask who owns the jets. In a special Umuaka Times investigations, it was discovered that most owners are drawn from oil and gas, finance, telecommunications, politics and religious organizations. Aviation experts say many musicians and entertainers charter jets rather than own them.<\/p>\n
The Federal Government says it is leveraging Nigeria\u2019s large private jet fleet to attract aircraft manufacturers to establish maintenance centers in the country. Keyamo noted that a Bombardier service center in Nigeria would reduce maintenance costs, conserve foreign exchange and create skilled jobs. The Minister also set up a Ministerial Taskforce to probe illegal charter operations involving foreign-registered jets and high net-worth individuals.

With an estimated 240 jets, Nigeria leads the continent in private jet operations, ahead of South Africa and Kenya. However, regulatory gaps and foreign registration remain major challenges for authorities.<\/p>\n
Umuaka Times also confirmed that Nigeria has the highest number of airline companies operating in in Africa. Reports confirmed that Nigeria has registered 91 airlines, ahead of South Africa’s 72 and Kenya’s 70. However, there is an important distinction: having the most airline companies does not mean having the largest airline industry or fleet. South Africa, for example, had fewer listed airlines but a larger combined fleet in that comparison. And in current scheduled capacity, Egypt is Africa’s largest aviation market, while Ethiopian Airlines is the continent’s largest carrier.<\/p>\n
