The much-awaited free medical outreach organized by Professor Emeka Duruigbo in conjunction with Revive, a Belgium-based non-governmental organization, has commenced at the Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Orlu, with more than 50 patients attended to on the first day. The program, which is being held at the hospital’s Multi-Purpose Hall, got underway following the arrival of the remaining members of the visiting medical team from Belgium.<\/p>\n
Although the commencement of consultations was delayed due to logistics, Umuaka Times local correspondents who monitored the exercise reported that activities subsequently proceeded smoothly, with patients given the opportunity to meet with the medical specialists and explain their health conditions.According to findings by Umuaka Times, more than 50 cases were handled by the medical team during the first day of the intervention. A significant number of the beneficiaries were Akalites, while others came from different parts of Orlu and neighbouring communities. Patients were reportedly attended to individually, with the doctors taking time to listen to their complaints, conduct consultations and determine the appropriate medical intervention required.<\/p>\n
Umuaka Times further gathered that some patients whose conditions required surgical procedures were identified during the initial consultations. Dates were subsequently scheduled for those patients to return for their surgeries.The medical outreach had originally been planned as a two-week program. However, the commencement was affected by delays experienced by some of the expatriate members of the medical team in securing their visas to travel to Nigeria.<\/p>\n
As a result, the program was shifted by one week, with the main activities now scheduled to run from Saturday, September 12, to Wednesday, September 16, 2026. Because of the adjustment, the medical team is expected to work on Sunday, which was not part of the original schedule.

Judging by the level of activities witnessed during the initial consultations and the seriousness with which members of the medical team are attending to patients, there are strong indications that a considerable number of people seeking medical assistance will benefit before the program comes to an end.The presence of the Belgian medical specialists has also generated considerable interest among residents of Umuaka and other communities in the Orlu area, many of whom have continued to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain specialist medical attention free of charge.<\/p>\n
Speaking with Umuaka Times late last week, Professor Emeka Duruigbo expressed optimism about the outreach and urged Akalites and other residents who require medical attention to take advantage of the opportunity. He said he was particularly hopeful that the program would enable people who might otherwise find specialist medical treatment difficult to afford to receive the assistance they need.<\/p>\n
The organizers are expected to continue the consultations, assessments and scheduling of surgical cases as the medical outreach progresses.<\/p>\n
