<\/p>\nThe question of who will fly the flag of the Labour Party in the 2027 House of Representatives election for the Nkwerre, Nwangele, Isu and Njaba Federal Constituency, popularly known as NINN, has become a subject of legal dispute following the emergence of two aspirants campaigning for the same position. The development has reportedly left some voters in the constituency seeking clarification over whether Hon. Macdonald Nnamdi Dire, popularly known as Oyi, or Hon. Solomon YagazieOnyejide is the authentic Labour Party candidate for the election. Dire, an IsioziAkah-born youthful politician, has instituted a legal action against Onyejide, the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), challenging what he described as the purported presentation of his defeated opponent’s name as the party’s candidate.<\/p>\n
Speaking with Umuaka Times correspondents in New York, United States, last week, Dire alleged that he won the Labour Party’s primary election conducted for the NINN Federal Constituency after securing the highest number of valid votes. According to him, the party subsequently issued him a Certificate of Return recognizing him as its duly elected candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election. Dire, however, said he was surprised when he discovered that the name of Onyejide, whom he described as one of his opponents in the primary election, had been submitted as the Labour Party’s candidate.<\/p>\n
Dire told Umuaka Times that his decision to approach the court was aimed at establishing who legitimately emerged from the party’s primary and determining which candidate should represent Labour Party in the election. Explaining his decision to seek judicial intervention, Dire said such disputes had occurred in Nigerian politics in the past.

“Well, this at times happens in politics. Some politicians will always maneuver and get their names enlisted illegally at the INEC portal. Remember the case of Rotimi Amaechi and Sir Celestine NgozichimOmehia from Rivers State?”<\/p>\n
Dire said he was asking the Federal High Court sitting in the matter to determine the authentic winner of the Labour Party primary and consequently resolve the controversy surrounding the party’s nomination. He wants the court to order the removal of the name of Hon Solomon Onyejide and put his name at the INEC portal because \u201cI won with 266 votes against Solomon that got only 14 votes in the four LGA.\u201d<\/p>\n
The case, according to him, is receiving an accelerated hearing, with the parties awaiting the determination of the court. He appealed to Labour Party members and his supporters to remain calm while the judicial process continues. On a special appeal to Umuaka Times, Dire urged his supporters to continue working towards building support for his candidacy, expressing confidence in his prospects in the 2027 election.<\/p>\n
The dispute has echoes of earlier Nigerian electoral nomination cases in which courts were asked to determine whether a political party could replace a person who emerged from a primary with another candidate. Umuaka Times dug deeper and discovered that one of the most prominent examples was the 2007 Rivers State governorship dispute involving Rotimi Amaechi and Celestine Omehia. Court records show that Amaechi won the PDP governorship primary with 6,527 votes out of 6,575 votes cast, while Omehia did not participate in the primary. PDP initially submitted Amaechi’s name to INEC before subsequently substituting Omehia’s name for his.<\/p>\n
The dispute eventually reached the Supreme Court. In its judgment, the court held that Amaechi was the lawful PDP candidate and ordered that he take over the governorship of Rivers State from Omehia.<\/p>\n
The Amaechi case therefore remains an important judicial precedent in disputes involving party primaries, candidate substitution and the relationship between political parties, candidates and INEC. The present NINN dispute, however, remains before the court, and the legal determination of wo is entitled to represent the Labour Party in the constituency is yet to be made.<\/p>\n
Until the matter is resolved by the appropriate judicial or electoral authorities, the competing claims of Dire and Onyejide have left voters in Nkwerre, Nwangele, Isu and Njaba seeking clarity over the candidate whose name will ultimately appear on the ballot for the Labour Party.<\/p>\n
The controversy surrounding the Labour Party’s NINN candidacy is not without precedent in Nigerian electoral politics. Another notable example was the case of Charles ChiwenduOdedo and Obinna Chidioka in Anambra State in 2007. Odedo won the PDP primary for the Idemili North and South Federal Constituency and the party initially submitted his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which published him as the candidate. His name was later substituted with that of Obinna Chidioka, prompting Odedo to seek judicial intervention. The matter eventually reached the Supreme Court, which held that the purported substitution was void and declared Odedo the proper candidate of the PDP for the constituency.<\/p>\n
More recently, similar disputes have emerged ahead of the 2027 elections. In Edo South, Sunny Aguebor has alleged that although he emerged from the NDC senatorial primary, information subsequently appearing on the INEC portal carried the name of his rival, Bridgette OsayukiEpelle-Asemota. The controversy has been reported as a dispute over the party’s nomination, with Aguebor maintaining that he has documents showing that he won the primary. The matter, however, remains an allegation and has not been presented here as a final judicial finding.<\/p>\n
A similar controversy has also been reported in Rivers State, where the Social Accountability Forum alleged that Prince Abele Wobo won the NDC primary for Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 1 with 292 votes, but that the name subsequently uploaded to the INEC portal was that of Hon. ManuchimUmezurike. The Forum also alleged that Umezurike did not participate in the primary. The dispute was reportedly taken to court, leaving the question of the authentic candidate to the appropriate legal process.<\/p>\n
In Lagos, another pre-election dispute was reported after Pratt Tunde instituted a suit against the NDC, SanniKamurdeen Olatunji and INEC, alleging that his name had been removed and Olatunji’s name uploaded as the candidate for the Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency. The case illustrates how disputes over party nominations and the names forwarded to INEC can become matters for judicial determination when aspirants challenge the authenticity of the nomination process.<\/p>\n
Against this background, the controversy surrounding the Labour Party’s NINN Federal Constituency ticket is now before the court. For voters in Nkwerre, Nwangele, Isu and Njaba, the central question remains who legitimately emerged from the party’s primary and whose name will ultimately be recognized as the Labour Party’s candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election. Until the court delivers its decision, the competing claims of Hon. Macdonald Nnamdi Dire and Hon. Solomon YagazieOnyejide remain subject to the outcome of the legal process.<\/p>\n
