He was buried the following day.

The passing of the footballer and goalkeeper has reopened memories of the days when football was not merely a game in Umuaka, but a major part of community life, with talented young men earning admiration and recognition through their performances on the football field. Among those who witnessed that era, Ogedemgbe’s name remains firmly remembered. He was one of the respected goalkeepers of his generation, featuring prominently for High School Umuaka as well as his community, Uba. Ogedemgbe belonged to a generation of footballers whose names became household names whenever football was discussed in Umuaka.

Agaba as he was fondly called by close associates was often mentioned in the same legendary circle with the late Eddy Ezekwem, popularly known as “Gallant,” and Dennis Durugbor, among others who contributed to the rich football history of the community.

The ace footballer may not have possessed the imposing height associated with many goalkeepers, but on the field, his physical stature appeared almost irrelevant. His courage, reflexes, determination and command of the goal area often made him appear much bigger than he actually was. He was known for throwing himself into difficult situations and standing his ground against attacking players who sometimes towered over him.And he was not confined to the goalpost. For several years, Ogedemgbe also featured for Uba as a central defender, where his toughness, confidence and understanding of the game made him equally valuable. Those who watched him play in those days of the 80s and early 90s remember a footballer who played with character.

Ogedemgbe later left football after playing for Monarch FC and went to Lagos where he picked a job with a construction firm. Some years later, he later went into clearing and from clearing of cars at Apapa and Tincan wharfs, he dusted his books and went to University of Lagos where he read Political Science. While football brought him fame among his people, Ogedemgbe’s life extended far beyond the football pitch.

Someone who knew him closely observed, “He was a graduate of Political Science from the University of Lagos, UNILAG, and went on to establish himself professionally in Lagos.”

After his NYSC Agaba worked as an aviation operative responsible for aircraft refueling at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, before illness eventually forced him to retire and return to Umuaka. His return home followed a stroke, which brought an end to his professional career and significantly changed the course of his later years. The death of Ogedemgbe was particularly painful for his former classmates of the 1984 set of High School Umuaka. Members of the class visited his lying-in-state to pay their final respects to a man with whom they had shared their formative years. For the classmates, the occasion was not simply a farewell to a former schoolmate. It was also a painful reminder of the passage of time and the loss of another member of their generation.

Meanwhile tributes have continued to come from friends, classmates, football associates and people who knew him in different stages of his life. Sheriff Obiagwu recalled Ogedemgbe as a strong and fearless goalkeeper and defender during their playing days.In an emotional tribute, he likened Ogedemgbe’s battle with death to a football match, noting that if death had been another football, his friend would have defended himself and won. Austin Dike, a Lagos-based car dealer and kinsman, expressed shock at the news of his death, describing the passing as devastating and heartbreaking. He also recalled that Ogedemgbe belonged to the Class of ’84 alongside his younger brother, the late Sabastine Ebele, popularly known as “Sabatex.”

Football commentator Coach UBK remembered Ogedemgbe not only as a superlative goalkeeper but also as a stylish and elegant personality. He recalled his exploits for Uba and noted that his performances between the posts earned him the nickname associated with Nigeria’s legendary national-team goalkeeper, the Green Eagles.Coach UBK also described him as an academic and businessman whose career and aspirations were interrupted by illness. For politician and sports writer Mr. Emma Izunwa, Ogedemgbe was more than a goalkeeper. Izunwa recalled his years as a central defender for Uba and described him as a tough-talking man who was never afraid to express his opinion. He also remembered Ogedemgbe for his distinctive and powerful accent, saying his absence would be deeply felt by those who knew him.

For the older generation of Umuaka people, the death of Ogedemgbe brings back memories of a period when football provided some of the community’s most exciting moments. It was a time when young footballers could command the attention of entire communities, when matches brought people together and when the exploits of local players were discussed long after the final whistle. Ogedemgbe was part of that story. His name became associated with the goalkeeping position, while his later years as a central defender demonstrated the versatility that made him an important figure in Uba football.Today, the football pitches may be different and the players may have changed, but for those who watched Ogedemgbe in his prime, memories of Ogedes between the posts are unlikely to disappear. His death is therefore being mourned not only as the loss of a husband, father, brother and friend, but also as the passing of one of the personalities from a memorable chapter in Umuaka’s football history.

Ogedemgbe is survived by his wife, children, a sister, and other members of his Ebeleukwu family. As Umuaka mourns, former classmates remember, and football lovers look back at the era that produced Ogedemgbe and his contemporaries, one name remains etched in the memories of those who watched him play. Ogedes. The goalkeeper. The defender. The character. Adieu, Ogedemgbe. May your gentle soul rest in the bosom of the Lord. Amen.

 18
