Akalites other Nigerians in Cyprus face hard times.

2 min read

Nigerians resident in the island country of Mediterranean Sea known as Cyprus are facing real hard time from the authorities. The Umuaka Times reporter in Nicosia reported that the police in the Cyprus island embarked on mass arrests of blacks, especially Nigerians over their non- compliance with their resident permit update.

An Akalite who lives in the country confirmed to Umuaka Times that the mass arrest activities are being witnessed because most of the blacks are yet to update their papers.

The Umuaka Times reporter also confirmed that many Blacks in the country tried to get their papers during the global COVID19 lockdown but were not successful due to the lockdown. The mass arrests have also led to the arrests of several international students from Nigeria. They are detained after the arrests and clamped into prison mostly without due process.

Another Akalite who spoke with Umuaka Times disclosed that there is a sizable number of Akalites in the country but he cannot confirm if any of them has been arrested so far. Most of the people arrested so far are said to be stranded Nigerian youths in the country. Some of them cried out that they do not also have flight tickets to come back home while some others were begging to be evacuated to Nigeria.

Recently, the Liberian president George Weah sent an aircraft to the country to evacuate its citizens back to Liberia. For now, it appears that the Nigerian government has no plans to bring back her citizens home as the mass arrests of Nigerians escalate. The move by the government of Cyprus has been tagged a gross human rights violation at some certain quarters.

For now, it is not clear enough if those arrested would be deported or not but what is clear is that the arrests are still ongoing.

“Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus, is an island country in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, south of the Anatolian Peninsula.

Continentally, it is often geographically placed in Western Asia while being geopolitically placed in Southeast Europe.”
