2 min read

The $50,000 grant which was made available to Attorney Chinwe Agams by the Open Society Institute for West Africa OSIWA to fight Covid19 in Umuaka community will also empower the Umuaka women in diverseways. While speaking with Umuaka Times last week, Chinwe Lesley Agams told the online newspaper that the program will embark on “data collection & capacity development on Umuaka pregnant women. Agams is of the opinion that it is yet unknown the risk Covid19 poses to pregnant women and their babies and for that reason, local maternity centres and birth attendants need information and preparation on current best practices.

Agams strongly believes that information sharing among these people and the institutions they work for, will support  women groups to increase capacity on hand sanitizers and liquid soap productions and making of face masks.

The program according to Chinwe Lesley Agams will also support an intervention by women groups in cases of domestic and sexual violence occurring in Umuaka community. The Women Crisis Centre will create links between the women groups and institutions like the Nigerian Police Force and Federation of International Women Lawyers for prompt rsponses in times of domestic violence and sexual violence as well.

This program as Umuaka Times gathered has been tailored to increase household and community food security through the creation of cassava and oil palm value chains, support local health care capacity & access through house to house screening & monitoring for diabetes, hypertension and more among the women population in the community.

The first phase of the program will last for six months.
