2 min readHistory was made on 3rd June 2023 when a high profile Akalite, chartered accountant and administrator, Mr Samuel Asikaogu emerged the chairman of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria ICAN, Imo State chapter. When Umuaka Times flashed the news as breaking news last week, several Akalites in and outside Nigeria flooded the Umuaka Times whatsapp group known as Umuaka Times Institute UTI, with congratulatory messages.
In a brief interview Mr Asikaogu granted to Umuaka Times last week, he narrated how the journey to greatness started. According to him, the office of the ICAN chairmanship is not a contestable position. The position is an integral part of ICAN’s succession plan. He further explained that for one to become an ICAN chairman, the fellow must have been the deputy vice chairman of the institution. The office of the deputy vice chairman is contestable.
For one to become the Chairman, he or she must have been the Deputy Vice Chairman of the institute. This position, Umuaka Times gathered is contestable. After the tenure of any serving chairman, the Vice Chairman succeeds him or her and the Deputy Vice Chairman succeeds the Vice Chairman.
To be the Deputy Vice Chairman, you must have occupied other positions for at least three years, after which the officer has to contest for the post of the Deputy Vice Chairman.
On how to become the chairman of ICAN, Mr Asikogu explained thus: “Once you are a Deputy Vice Chairman, it takes you two years of commitment to service, and meeting of financial obligations and good conduct to become a chairman.”
The activities that brought Mr Asikogu to power were formalized on June 3, 2023 during the Annual General Meeting of the organization. Umuaka Times confirmed that except the chairmanship of the institute, any other position is contestable.
On the preparedness of Mr Asikaogu to lead the Imo State chapter of ICAN, the new boss on the saddle has already issued his blueprint and made it known to the institute. “My blueprint is to bring about training and retraining of accountants and prospective accountants.”
Asikogu, a native of Umuezealaoma Achara community in Umuaka Municipal Council had his qualification in 2005 and was inducted in 2007. He will be in charge of ICAN for one full year that is from 15th July 2023 to end June 2024.
