UTI students frown at the excesses of EzeNdi Igbo in diaspora.

Students of Umuaka Times Institute, the name given to the whatsapp group of Umuaka Times newspapers last week starting from Wednesday 2 April 2025 brainstormed and seriously deliberated on the “office” of EzeNdi Igbo outside Igboland and outside Nigeria. In the weekly debate of the group, students last week took a critical look at the character and behaviour of the people who hold the title of EzeNdi Igbo and seriously frowned at their excesses and called them to order. According to the views expressed by the students, it was gathered that a couple of years ago, the holders of the title were directed by Igbo royal fathers at home to adopt the name OyeNduNdi Igbo instead of the name of EzeNdi Igbo because no community has two royal fathers.

The students went further and agreed that EzeNdi Igbo title is something that is supposed to be preserved and maintained because the title holders are the promoters of Igbo culture and tradition in foreign lands. Another regrettable action or activity attributed to the holders of the EzeNdi Igbo title across Nigeria and outside is that the “foreign royal fathers” tend to overshadow their royal fathers in their different Igbo communities during events because of their influence in the society.

In conclusion, the students unanimously agreed that EzeNdi Igbo title shall remain but under a different name such as president-general, chairman, Igbo leader or more.

For now the advocacy for change has been made by UTI students, it is left for the foreign Igbo royal fathers to embark on the process to changing their names from EzeNdi Igbo in where they live to OnyeNduNdi Igbo etc.
