UBA umuaka born Lagos lawyer and motivational speaker Barrister Emma Duruigbo has expressed deep shock at the declining interest in education among youths in his Uba Umuaka community. The concern raised by the lawyer follows a recent call to bar ceremony where 7 new lawyers were recognized and none of whom is from Uba. Historically, Uba has been a hub for producing numerous lawyers and sound academics thereby making the trend particularly alarming.
Duruigbo who is the principal, Ducex Solicitors Lagos, emphasized that the academic reputation of Uba for prioritizing education appears to be seriously drifting and further expressed deep concerns over that. When reminded that one of the new lawyers had maternal ties to Uba, he stressed that Uba shouldn’t settle for anything less than the top spot because according to him, only the best is good for Uba. “It is still baffling to me that 7 lawyers were called to bar recently and none of them is from Uba Umuaka. This is a community that has produced the highest number of lawyers and other academics in Umuaka if not in the whole of Njaba LGA. This shows that we have a lot of works to do in Uba.”
Umuaka Times reporters gathered that Uba community has in the recent time, implemented some initiatives to encourage academic pursuits in the community the fencing of Hilltop Primary School and High School Umuaka to create a conducive learning environment for students.
Some weeks ago, Professor Emeka Duruigbo paid the NECO registration fees for all the final-year students of High School Umuaka and Dr. Chris established a 50,000 dollar education fund for Umunwada students admitted in any university overseas.
Various community-driven initiatives supporting students’ educational pursuits are also available in the community but despite these efforts, it appears that materialism and the pursuit of wealth may be distracting students from academic excellence. To address this issue, Duruigbo has called for an emergency community meeting. He also extended congratulations to the newly called lawyers and appreciation to their parents for their support.
