Merit College of Nursing Sciences is a new academic hub which promises to create healthcare revolution not only in Orlu but the whole of Imo State and Southeastern Nigeria. A look at the mission statement of the great institution explains that the mission of the school is “To produce exceptional, high performing nurses and leaders who would transform healthcare and the lives of the communities we serve.” Already, people with visionary eyes have started to address the school as a centre for excellence.

The admission for new students who would like to pursue a career in the healthcare sector is currently ongoing and the school has begun with about 100 students. Computers and other healthcare materials and devices are available at the Merit College of Nursing Sciences for effective learning.

Merit College of Nursing Sciences Orlu (MCNS) is an expansion of the previously known Women of Devine Destine Initiative (WODDI) facility in Orlu Imo State, Nigeria. WOODDI facility transformed to MCNS with the objective to design and develop a top-notch college of nursing and midwifery whose mission is to “produce exceptional, high performing nurses and leaders who would transform healthcare and the lives of the communities we serve.

This center of excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Education offers a state-of-the-art facility furnished with the latest technology and innovation, including computer labs, science and simulation labs, a premier library, comfortable modern classrooms, access to e-learning and e-library, and an ultramodern students’ hostel.

A magnificent sight to behold. Accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, we offer the highest level of Nursing and Midwifery education using evidence-based practices. We designed our curricula to meet the unique needs of our students to prepare them for the challenges of complex and ever-evolving healthcare systems.

Merit College will solely enroll students for three years Higher National Diploma (HND) education, which comprise general nursing, basic midwifery, public health, as well as other skills acquisition programs under the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE). This degree and certification program is geared to empower the population we serve to improve their level of education, health and social economic status and the overall quality of life which is the core vision of Orlu United Medication Foundation.

MCNS hosts six spacious innovative classrooms which are equipped with telemedicine technology, such as Zoom, Canvas and Webinar learning platforms, a learning resource and skills acquisition center, laboratory in which student can practice their skills and clinical decision making. MCNS also features center for excellence in nursing education and medical library, a state-of-the-art simulation studio, a six hundred fifty capacity auditorium, a wonderful architectural courtyard, outdoor patio and amusement parking lot. The simulation studio provides opportunities for students to work in teams to acquire clinical judgment and develop their professional nursing roles.

Merit College of Nursing Sciences is a branch of Orlu United Medical Foundation (OUMF) and is affiliated with Orlu United Medical Center (OUMC). This cutting-edge Medical Center offers students the opportunity to complete their clinical rotation in the same environment instead of traveling to different parts of the state to acquire clinical experience. Merit College aims to produce innovative, high performing, successful, and ethical nurses and leaders who will transform the healthcare industry locally and internationally.

ABOUT THE TRANSITION TO PRACTICE PROGRAM: A transition to practice program is also available to new graduate registered nurses with no prior work experience. This 12-months clinical intensive hands-on program is geared to provide the new graduate nurse with the necessary tools needed to provide evidence-based/best practice nursing care with quality outcome.

MEDICAL CAREER CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS: Certification on critical skills such as Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Certification on Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Psychiatric and Mental Health Certification (PMHNC), Emergency Medical Support (EMS), Echocardiograms (EKG) reading and interpretations, Telemetry Skills, Intravenous (IV) care skills, Radiology Technicians skill, Phlebotomy, Medical Records certification, Food & Nutrition Services, Physical Therapist Aid, Home Health Aide Skills Certification. Environmental Management Services (EMS) and Program. MCNS is in collaboration with NBTE to approve these certificate programs.
