A Tribute to My Beloved Mother. By George Izunwa.

2 min read

It is a difficult thing to take. I never imagined that my mum would be leaving us in 2022. She still had so much life in her at the turn of the year & I have gotten used to seeing God bring her through any challenging issue. However, in all things, God is faithful!

Mama was the simplest, meekest & most peaceful woman you could ever meet. Nothing mattered to her more than her relationship with God & the wellbeing of her children. Her love for people was genuine, unconditional & non-judgmental. Her heart was so open & so pure; it is difficult to find anyone that could consider her an enemy!

She was that woman that made sure we had a family prayer time every morning & every night. You would avoid doing wrong, not just to honor God, but also to avoid breaking her heart. Many times, God will show her things about the family, so vividly that when it eventually happens, it almost feels like you are experiencing a repeat of it! God could trust her with so much because she was a true intercessor.

Mama loved my wife & family with a passion. She even left her business & went with my wife to the Law School just to take care of Michelle. Mama organized a group of her elderly friends for years, they would meet for long hours every Wednesday to intercede for Gateway International Church & me. Mama will tearfully pray for her children & grandchildren with an intense passion to see their lives become a blessing. God set her as a spiritual pillar for the family.

When Mama’s health began to fail and she came to stay with us, one day, I came into her room & saw her weeping. I was very concerned & thought something major had happening. Then she told me the reason: she has not been able to appear in church for 6 weeks now. I had to commit to praying with her & giving her God’s word & communion every day to get her to stop crying. God was her addiction.

My mum is gone, but we will not mourn as those who have no hope, knowing she has simply gone to be with her Jesus. We will meet again with her, but for now, let her take her place among the cloud of witnesses as an intercessor for us. God showed her mercy and that same God will keep showing her, his unfailing love, by being kind to us.

Bye Mama. See you at the end of this race, at the feet of Jesus!
