Agunechemba: Illusions and Allusions.
2 min readSince High Chief Eddy Ikwubuo declared his interest to be the next councilor representing the Umuaka Ward 1 at Njaba LGA, many have expressed surprise and wondered and tried to decode what kind of a man the Onowu of Umuaka is made of. Several whatsapp messages which were released last week by some political observers in the said ward tried to question the integrity of Agunechemba as a democrat. A Lagos based trader from Uba Umuaka who did not want his name mentioned specifically asked why the high profile chieftaincy title holder would like to stand for such a low position since he is already the Onowu of Uba Umuaka and Umuaka Municipal Council generally. In his own opinion, the Lagos based trader concluded that Ikwubuo will automatically lose his position as the Onowu of Uba if he wins the councillorship election.
Another fellow from Achara Mr Okey Mbah, a political activist and a legal practitioner described the declaration by Chief Ikwubuo as a move dictators always make. The fellow went further and requested Ikwubuo to show his scorecard as a former chairman of Njaba LGA.
One Akajiugo who was writing in Akah Political Circle whatsapp group wrote; “You are referring to orlu. Why did he not go for local government chairmanship where he first showed interest on this platform before he withdrew and abided by the Njaba zoning arrangements, knowing he had no chance of winning, and that’s why he reversed and came to Ward 1 already agreed zoning formula to scatter it.”
According to him, “APC Ward 1 Exco called the stakeholders meeting and it was agreed that Achara should provide a candidate for the councillorship position. We are not shouting to hold anybody not to contest but let it be known who scattered the arrangement and from which community. We are watching.”
The noisy political atmosphere generated by the sudden declaration of High Chief Ikwubuo to run for councillorship in Umuaka Ward 1 also made news headlines among Akalites in diaspora last week. Umuaka Times received several inquiries last week from diaspora in trying to establish the truth behind the story they had as a rumour.
A high profile Akalite who called from South Africa wondered why the political ambition of one man will create a storm of diverse opinions among Akalites. In his own words, “The Agunechemba has the right to vie for any position he deserves. He has indicated his interest to serve the people, it is left for the people to decide if they want his service or not. We are tired of all this noise.”
For now High Chief Ikwubuo has been crossing his Ts and dotting his Is in trying to create a smooth atmosphere that will successfully see him smoothly move back to Njaba LG headquarters as an elected official.
Only time will tell for High Chief Edwin Chidi Ikwubuo, the Agunechemba Njaba.
