“Students” of Umuaka Times Institute, the whatsapp group of Umuaka Times newspaper have decried the model of democracy that is practiced in Nigeria in the last 26 years. The students who expressed their opinions individually were participants in a weekly debate program organized online by Umuaka Times newspapers every Wednesday by 8pm. The debate titled, To What Extent Has Democracy Saved Us Since 1999, lasted about two days and all the students who spoke during the event outrightly condemned the version of democracy practiced in Nigeria.
Mr Innocent Duru, the first and regular participant in Umuaka Times debates was as usual, the first person to make his views open during the debate. According to him, Nigeria does not understand what true democracy is all about. He went further to stress that since the day Nigeria got her independence from Britain; Nigeria has never witnessed a true democracy. He further extolled the Nigerian Army for giving Nigeria the necessary good things of life the country can boast of.
Mr Madueke, another participant outrightly described democracy in Africa as governments of failures and disappointments. He further cited the example of where a state governor would decamp to another political party with his commissioners and other appointees by force.
Chief Ambrose Okorie who also spoke during the debate bitterly complained that democracy brought only killings to Nigerians.
Mr Goddy Iwuoha who also spoke during the debate expressed his sound views that the military in Nigeria gives more freedoms to Nigerians than successive democratic governments.
Many other students of the institute who spoke during the debate gave 99 percent of military government as against the Nigerian version of democracy and called for a revolutionary intervention.
