Another Catholic priest shot dead.

Tragedy again struck at the Nigerian chapter of Roman Catholic Church last week when a Catholic Rev Father was shot dead by yet to be identified gunmen In Edo State. Rev Father Charles Igechi under the Benin Archdiocese, who was ordained a priest just in August 2022, met his untimely death along the bypass area of Agbor Road in the neighbourhood of Ikhueniro of Benin Edo State.

Reports emerged last week shortly after his murder that the churchman was killed while on his way to his primary assignment parish.

Umuaka Times gathered that the Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, Rev Dr Augustine Akubeze, disclosed to newsmen that the incident has been reported to the police authorities in the state.

In the last couple of years, the Catholic Church across the country has suffered serious attacks from the hands of gunmen, bandits and terrorists.

From some reports issued by the Department of Church and Society, an organ of Roman Catholic Church in Nigeria, “about 39 Catholic priests have been killed with 30 abducted since 2012…17 catechists and over 3,500 Catholic faithful had been assassinated since 2012.”

The organization also added that there is a record of more than 45 violent attacks on the Church across Nigeria.
