Critics keep attacking Obi Kubana over mum’s burial.
3 min readSince last week, following the glamorous and carnival like burial of the mother of the multi talented popular businessman and socialite, Chief Obi Iyiegbuoo known as Obi Cubana, many Nigerians have been reacting in different manners over the burial. Last week, the home town of the deceased, Oba, in Anambra State, became the most trending town in the world on social media and Obi Cubana also trended alongside. Days before the burial and on the burial date, the greetings among many persons in and outside Nigeria was, “didn’t you go to Oba?”
On the burial date, many big boys across the country came in their large numbers to witness the event thereby creating an unstoppable avenue for rich and young Nigerian celebrities and businessmen to hijack the event. The spraying of money occupied a better part of the event and many celebrities were seen throwing bundles of Naira and American Dollar bills in the air and to Cubana himself. Umuaka Times saw a video clip where bundles of money were used as football by the big boys.
This singular act of display has indeed attracted the attention of many persons across the country who felt like attacking what transpired during the event. One of those attackers was popular Nollywood actor, Mr Uche Maduagwu. Writing on his Instagram account last week, Maduagwu wondered why Cubana would claim that he was rich while the road leading to the venue where the burial ceremony of his mother was held was never tarred. He did not stop there, he went further to also attack those who were spraying money at the event. “According to section 21 of the CBN act, 2007, a person who spray the Naira risk imprisonment for a term not less than six months but why are the billionaires who sprayed money at Oba town still walking like kings on the street?”
Perhaps, Maduagwu has used tarring of roads which is the responsibility of the government as a barometer to measure wealth and riches. Many Nigerian social media critics who didn’t find these statements encouraging took a stand to defend Obi Cubana. Writing on the famous Lind Ikeji’s Blog, an anonymous writer reacted saying, “Obi Cubana is not the State Governor or Local Government Chairman. He is not responsible for the construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of roads and public infrastructure.”
Still on the same Linda Ikeji’s blog, another fellow who uses the code name Ukaa Maramma, decided to attack Linda Ikeji instead of the Nollywood actor who made the statement. in his words, he wrote, “Linda ikeji, you are such a very wicked human being. You are secretly jealous of Obi Cubana if not you wouldn’t have shared this nonsense that boy said on your blog. I put it to you that you are secretly envious of him(Obi) and its too bad of you seriously.”
Another commentator who tried to go philosophical on the issue was very emphatic in his own submission. The fellow who decided to write in Nigerian English in defence of Cubana. “So na Obi Cubana go tar road for government? Lol He will tar the road that leads to his house and the ones that leads to the church and the ones from the airport where his guest arrived from? If government no go tar the road make them leave am. But one thing I can assure all you haters is that when you hate on someone God has blessed you will wait for him/her to fail and God will continue disappointing you. You and your parents were broke before Obi make money and you guys are still broke and will remain poor until you stop hating on rich people.”
Another fellow who attacked the event in Oba was The Senior Special Assistant to Governor, Yahaya Bello of Kwara State media assistant, Atuluku Victor. “Shame on anyone who supports what happened in Anambra and still complains about this country…no be for moon those guys make dem cash, na for dis same Naija!”
Last week also, there were insinuations by some radio and TV journalists who decided to attack the burial in Oba as well. Some even termed it a wastage of resources and called on the police to go after some of the guests. Umuaka Times from its findings noted that the event had come and gone and money spent in diverse capacities. Many people benefited from the whole event financially.
