2 min read

A foremost Obinwanne Umuaka Autonomous Community born educationist and a member of Obinwanne Umuaka Council of Chiefs, Chief Cyril Ukoma (the Ikeoha 1 of Obinwanne) has appealed to Obinwanne youths to embrace education. The appeal which was made last week was a part of Chief Ukeoma’s reaction to a controversial debate concerning the issue of seniority among Umuaka Ebeiri communities.

The debate which was held online achieved a storm of conflicting opinions among Akalites who were subscribers to the whatsapp group where the debate was held. As things were about to get out of hand, the royal father of Obinwanne Umuaka Autonomous Community, HRM Eze Justin Uzoma Ezeala appealed to Obinwanne subscribers to the group to desist from making further comments on the subject. The Onye Eze unequivocally told his subjects that the Obinwanne Autonomous Community has successfully passed a message to other autonomous communities in Umuaka and there was no need to continue to over-flog the debate.

While reacting to the debate, Chief Ukoma lamented that the get rich quick syndrome in Umuaka has affected the youths of the community where most of them see academic education as a monumental scam. He eventually called for a stop to the social monster and made a passionate appeal to the youths to embrace education.

In the recent years, stakeholders in Umuaka in particular and Igbo communities generally have reported a sharp drop among male youths in school enrolments across the Southeast Nigerian states. The cause for the drop is largely attributed to the quest for materialism in the society according to experts.
