Hon Izunwn wants climate change included in school studies.
2 min readThe honourable member representing Umuaka Ward 1in Njaba LGA has called for the inclusion of climate change in schools across the country as a special way to fight the sad effects of climate change. This call was made recently by Hon Izunwa in a press statement he issued about the state of climate change in the Umuaka locality and environs.
While discussing with Umuaka Times late last week, Hon Izunwa painted a graphic picture of the damage climate change will do to our environment if nothing is done to educate students about it. He cited the case of the road construction going on from Owerri to Orlu. According to his findings, there is a big climatic danger even in Imo State. “As I speak, the entire Afor Umuaka is now covered by thick smog following a road construction trans-versing from Owerri to Orlu. The government’s intention in doing this road is wonderful but the thick smog can shorten ones lifespan. Our environment has continued to be polluted because the government has done little or nothing about it.”
Hon Izunwa regretted that in the entire African continent, many countries are unaware of the climate change effects and are treating the issue with a kid glove. On this flaw, he went on to strengthen his advocacy.
“It will truly be a good idea if climate change is included in our children academic calendar, from primary school to even university level. In Africa,a substantial number of the population is unaware of the danger of climate change. More than eight five percent of Africans thought climate change is a joke. Even African leaders of today are taking the issue of climate change with kids gloves.”
On the panacea towards the climate change global challenge, Hon Izunwa appealed to the authorities in Nigeria and Africa to immediately incorporate climate change challenge into academic calendar of all the primary, secondary and post secondary schools across the continent. “If we must tackle climate change, a child of five years must understand the implications of climate change and only place to exhibit that is in the classroom. They must understand the implications of deforestation and the need to plant trees for future generations.”
The honourable member ended his gospel of climate change interventions by saying strongly, “Government must start from the scratch if we must fight climate change here in Africa to a standstill.”
