The Ghanaian traditional institutions have dethroned the famous Igbo king in Ghana, HRM Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, Eze Ohazurume 1, and the Eze Ndi Igbo in the Ga State of Ghana. A document Umuaka Times correspondent in Ghana came across last week says “The term “Ga State” refers to the Ga Traditional Area in Ghana, which is home to the Ga people and their capital, Accra. The Ga people are an ethnic group residing on the southeast coast of Ghana, known for their distinct language and cultural practices. The Ga State is also associated with the Ga Mantse, the traditional ruler or king of the Ga people.”
A copy of the press release issued by the Ga Traditional Council dated July 9 2025 under the auspices of Local Government Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs which was made available to Umuaka Times and issued to all media houses had more explanations. The letter titled Press Release by the Ga Traditional Council states that, “The Ga Traditional Council has observed with dismay recent happenings in the Ga State surrounding an Igbo king by name Eze Dr Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu who has accorded himself King of the Igbos in Ghana.
At an emergency meeting held in Ghana at the Ga Traditional Council on the 9th day of July 2025, presided over by the President, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Ga Mantse and all members, the understated were resolved unanimously:
The letter continues, “The GA Traditional Council disassociates itself from all activities of the said Eze Dr Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu.
The Council has never recognized anybody or person as a king of the Igbos within the Ga State.
Recognition of persons and their induction at the Ga Traditional Council has always been conditional and upon entry of one’s name in the National Register of Chiefs. The Ga Traditional Council is a creation of Stature.
The letter seriously warns that “Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu who is also addressed as Dr or Ambassador should henceforth cease and desist from holding himself out as a king of the Igbos in the Ga State by way of performing any traditional activity.”
In its conclusion, the letter also directs that “All assigned Paramount and Divisional Chiefs installed by Eze Dr Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu should also henceforth cease and desist from holding themselves out as such within the Ga State and further states that “All Traditional and Cultural festivities under guise of importing Igbo culture presided over by Eze Dr Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu in his capacity as king of the Igbos in the Ga State should cease forthwith.”
