Imo Security forces burst shrines at Njaba River.

2 min read

On Wednesday 5 March 2025, the worshipers of Njaba River goddess and the patrons who always visit the river for different types of sacrifices for good fortunes were surprised when an army of policemen and other security forces stormed the shrine at the prime of their spiritual activities. Over the years, people have complained that “motorcycle boys” (a group of young boys who got money through yet to be established means and bought motorcycles) always cluster at the bank of the Njaba River to make sacrifices at unholy hours. Almost every night, more than 50 “motorcycle boys” from Okwudor, Umuaka, Ekwe, Amurie, Amandugba, Umundugba and more are said to be at the river to offer sacrifices suspected to be “money medicine”. In order to find out what really goes on at the famous river, the police stormed the river in the middle of last week and made some arrests.

A video which emerged last week showed some people who were trying to prove their innocence when the police was interrogating them. They denied involvement in any form of crime at the bank of Njaba River.

When Umuaka Times visited the Njaba River last Thursday, some people were seen at the neighbourhood of the river. They were afraid to speak to Umuaka Times but one who volunteered to speak, only disclosed and confirmed that some arrests were made at the river but the reason for the arrests was not yet known according to him.

For now calm seems to have returned to Njaba River as “motorcycle boys” are afraid to near the area not to talk of carrying out sacrifices. Many people from the nearby communities to Njaba River hailed the police for bursting the river. In their own views, Njaba does not like the activities of the “motorcycle boys” and their juju men. If truly the reason for gathering to perform sacrifices at Njaba River has to do with “money medicine”, it will not be long for the boys to reunite again and take back their trade.
