Insecurity: “Motorcycle boys” go into hiding.

2 min read

Following the invasion and burning of some houses in Amaeze community in Isu LGA last week by some security agencies of the state, several “motorcycle boys” have disappeared from the streets of Umuaka and her environs with their motorbikes. The cause of the disappearance according to the reports Umuaka Times gathered was because during the raid in Amaeze, some hotels were also raided by the police in the LGA and several motorcycle boys were arrested. Some of the motorcycle boys who were arrested were seen with dangerous substances suspected to be hard drugs. The arrests cut across some motorcycle boys from Umuaka and other nearby towns.

Umuaka Times was reliably informed that the security forces who carried out the raids, had more interests on “motorcycle boys” whose motorcycles had no number plates. A good number of them was arrested and taken to Owerri, the state capital for interrogations. Some of the motorcycle owners were arrested alongside with their motorcycles while others escaped. In less than 20 minutes after the raids, the motorcycle boys sent messages via their social media outlets and informed their colleagues about the ongoing raids. This according to what Umuaka Times observed, made some of them to disappear from the roads or move around their neighbourhoods without their motorcycles.

A motorcycle boy who spoke to Umuaka Times claimed that they were being arrested by the police because of their tattoos and dreadlocks. “That is why most of us took emergency haircuts. Others who have tattoos on their bodies now wear long sleeve shirts or t-shirts to cover the tattoos.”

Shortly before press time last week, most of the arrested ‘motorcycle boys” were still cooling off at the police station in Owerri. More events are likely to unfold within the week concerning the arrests, detention and release of the “motorcycle boys” and their motorcycles.
