Last days of sports betting draw nearer as Reps move to ban it.
1 min readThe fillers Umuaka Times local affairs correspondents gathered last week revealed that the House of Representatives has reached a decision to proscribe sports betting in all the states in Nigeria including Abuja. This move is following the adoption of a motion presented at the lower chambers by Honourable Kelechi Nwogu, a member of PDP from Rivers State.
The House of Reps has also appealed to the National Lottery Regulatory Commission of Nigeria to wade into the issue and comply seriously with the 2005 Act of the Lottery Regulatory Commission.
From the reports Umuaka Times monitored last week, it was estimated that about 60 million Nigerians engage in the act of sports betting ranging from 18 to 60 years of age. While quoting the lawmaker who brought the motion, Punch newspaper reported thus: “According to the lawmaker, weak or neglected regulations of sports betting have given rise to mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and addiction.”
Last week, some youths who heard about the move by the National Assembly described it as self-centered move and appealed to their fellow youths to resist the move.
