Umuaka Times reporters would also like to take a look at the commendable behaviour of some good lawyers around the world.

Legal practitioners indeed play vital roles in upholding justice, protecting human rights, strengthening democracy and promoting the rule of law. Many lawyers across the world are known for the selfless services they provide to those who seek justice. Here in Nigeria, the late Chief GaniFawehinmi represented this during his lifetime as a high profile human rights advocate. So sad Gani died without winning the Nobel Prize for Peace. Today, many lawyers across the world have continued to demonstrate exceptional dedication, integrity and compassion in their works especially towards the poor and the oppressed. Free legal aid otherwise known as pro bono serviceis a mighty tool lawyers use to provide free services to marginalized communities and individuals, ensuring access to justice and civic liberties for those who cannot afford them especially in poverty-stricken countries.

Lawyers also use advocacy workshops to promote fundamental human rights. To achieve this, such lawyers work closely with donor agencies that fund such projects globally. To achieve this, such good lawyers Umuaka Times gathered, strive to hold governments accountable to their actions and inactions towards the masses and organizations.

It is on record that many lawyers have freed wrongly convicted prisonersthereby oiling the wheels of justice and holding governments accountable for their illegal and inhuman treatments to prison inmates and the poor masses. No matter how unpopular or controversial some cases may be, human rights lawyers take cases on pro bono basisand secure justice at last. Lawyerswho practice this type of law have been described as the “the slaves of a cause, cause of the people and cause of justice and liberty by Franz Fanon. Such lawyers deserve an award.

In some difficult societies, lawyers have stood up bravely against criminals in power, corrupt officials and powerful interests, fighting for justice and accountability. They have developed innovative solutions to address legal challenges, such as mobile courts, online dispute resolution platforms, and community-based legal clinics. A document Umuaka Times came across last week says, “Lawyers engage in community outreach and education, empowering individuals with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities.”

Remember MalalaYousafzai? Pro bono lawyers played a crucial role in advocating for her right to education and survival after she was targeted by the Taliban. They also use organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Human Rights Watch and Lawyers Without Boarders to assist the poor. The role played by lawyers in the case of MalalaYousafzai was instrumental in making the poor girl win Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 at the age of 17.

Another document Umuaka Times came across says, “Commendable behavior by lawyers promotes justice, fairness, and equality, contributing to a more just society.”

One writer concludes, “Lawyers who demonstrate exceptional dedication and integrity inspire others to follow in their footsteps, fostering a culture of service and responsibility.”

By highlighting the commendable behaviour of lawyers, we can recognize the valuable contributions they make to our society and encourage others to emulate their examples. Ride on the men and women of substance of the noble profession. On this note, Umuaka Times urges Justin ChukwudiEzeala, OluchiOnumara, Chisom Evangelista Eze, Mercy NgoziNwamba, Cynthia IfunanyaOpara, MirianChinasaIkwu and ChiamakaAppiahUzuegbu to follow the path of honour and disassociate themselves from lawyers who are liars.

  1. Professor Mazi Ojiaku’s prediction was fulfilled several decades ago. You rarely hear about the type of parties that we threw during our call to Bar 42 years ago. Yet, there have been very many lawyers called to bar all these while.

What however made the recent call of our brother and sisters unique and exciting is the number of lawyers (seven) produced by our community in one fell swoop. It is worthy of every celebration. And to think that six of them are gentlemen in skirts (as we call them in legal circles)makes it more amazing. We are mightily proud of them all and wish them success in their respective endeavours. They (especially the brains and beauties) are truly trailblazers and we urge others to emulate them in making Umuaka proud.
