Amiyi Akah top stakeholder and high profile MC, Chief Louis Duru has appealed to teachers both in primary and post primary schools in the state to always use punishments of their students as a correctional measure instead of a destructive measure.
Chief Louis Duru who is a onetime commissioner in the state was reacting to a development in Umuaka a couple of weeks ago where a school principal was alleged to have flogged a student until she fainted. Speaking with Umuaka Times local reporters, Duru appealed to teachers to channel their corrective measures at school towards less flogging and beating of students. Hear him: “If a student comes to school late, you can mandate him to a manual labour, or direct him to knell down while studies are going on. Subjecting such students to such a highly inhuman treatment is condemnable.”
Another burning issue the honourable addressed was the behaviour of some parents who rush to schools to fight some teachers for punishing their children. Duru condemned this act in strongest terms and charged such parents to desist from such a badly manifested attitude. “I remember when we were in schools, our parents would secretly tell our teachers to flog us whenever we indulged in inappropriate behaviour at school.”
Honourable Duru concluded by citing two prominent examples where he disclosed that Chief G.C Onyeche and Mr. G.F. Oti, former principals of High School Umuaka respectively are today reaping the great benefits of their positive roles at High School Umuaka from their former students. He finally extoled the virtues of teachers generally, on their role in training children of tomorrow. He prayed to God to continue to use teachers to build a positive future in the state and Nigeria in general.
