The killing of yet another bright Akalite in the Southern African country of South Africa on Sunday 24 August 2025 has sparked up a discussion which centers on what Akalites are really doing in South Africa that seems to have nothing to offer. Akalites started to move into South Africa over 20 years ago when the apartheid regime came to an end and Nelson Mandela and other freedom fighters got released from jail. The quest for greener pastures was the driving force that got many Akalites to South Africa over the years. Till date, a good number of them has no papers; they live illegally in the country. It is estimated that over 3,000 Akalites live in South Africa; some of them have been murdered while others have left the country and returned home or moved to other countries as a result of fear of violence and xenophobia.

According to the documents Umuaka Times obtained last week from www.thegotoguy.co.za and www.grandup.news, “Over 27,000 people were murdered in South Africa from April 2022 to March 2023, with a murder rate of 46 per 100,000 people. This is one of the highest rates worldwide, with Jamaica being the only country with a worse rate.”
Last year alone according to a document Umuaka Times correspondents in South Africa sent across, “Approximately 20 Nigerians were killed in South Africa in 2024 alone, with little or no justice served to the killers. Umuaka community has been on the receiving end of the South African killing madness over the years. In an absolutely conservative list Umuaka Times obtained last week, the following Akalites were murdered in South Africa with no justifiable reasons by criminals suspected to be South Africans: Uba: Iwuagwu Ihesie, Nnaji Achazie, Chukwunenye Chukwuma, Ugochukwu Ukonu and Mr Ayanugwo.
Ugbele: Nwaizu Ugwuala, Ndidi Nwagbara and Ugochukwu Ibeawuchi.
Amiyi: Ugochukwu Uzoma (a.k.a Russia).
Isiozi: Okechi Nlemuzor, Mr Nwachukwu. Obinwanne: Gabriel Duru and UdoDuru.
In the last two years about 116 Nigerians lost their lives in attacks in the country with the majority of killings carried out by the South African Police authorities. “Between 2019 and February 2022, at least 128 Nigerian citizens lost their lives in South Africa, primarily due to acts of xenophobic violence. In early 2019, 10 Nigerians were killed by citizens or police, highlighting a disturbing trend of extrajudicial killings.”
Notable among these cases include the case of the late – Ebuka Nwokolo, a 43-year-old Nigerian who died after police brutality in Northern Cape in May 2024. Another case involved the late Mr Ejike Ekemezie who died in SAPS police custody in Polokwane in March 2023. Chinonso Ifeeme was killed by a mob attack in Sasolburg, Free State, in September 2023 for no just cause. Till date, justice was never served.
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, disclosed that around 121 Nigerians were killed in South Africa in the last 18 months (as of August 2025). Another report Umuaka Times came across also suggests that 127 Nigerians died in South Africa over a three-year period, with 13 killed by South African police. The report also claimed that between January and June 2019, 10 Nigerians were reportedly killed in South Africa.
Top voices in Umuaka last week appealed to Umuaka Times to ask Akalites living in the country of South Africa to either return home or move to another country. In response, Umuaka Times gathered that a good number of Akalites living in South Africa may not afford their air tickets home as they sleep in the streets. For now, the question still re-echoes; what do Akalites do in South Africa? A country that has no job opportunities!
In the last 20 years, about 1000 Nigerians have so far been killed in South Africa. How many South Africans have been killed in Nigeria? None!
