The Catholic Diocese of Abuja Laity Council of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Azhayapi, Byazhin-Kubwa Abuja has presented an award of recognition to Mrs Ekechi Calista (formally Ubasonye). The prestigious award which the Abuja correspondents of Umuaka Times have confirmed, was presented to Mrs Ekechi on 23 March 2025, was in recognition and appreciation of her dedication, generosity and selfless services to the growth and development of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church Azhayapi FCT Abuja.
While holding talks with Umuaka Times, Mrs Ekechi who was an embodiment of joy and appreciation during the encounter, disclosed that it was the Laity Council of the church that presented the award to her. It can be recalled that in June 2023, Mrs Ekechi won a similar award. Ekechi expressed deep sentiments that she was not aware of what she has done that qualified her for the award.
Further inquiries by Umuaka Times confirmed that Mrs Ekechi is the President of the Catholic Lectors Association of Nigeria of the Parish as well as an active member of St. Vincent De Paul, a society in the Catholic Church that sees to the welfare of the poor, needy and less-privileged irrespective of tribe, race or religion. She is also a Friend of the Daughters of Charity (an organization still under the umbrella of the church for both Christians and Muslims).

When asked to disclose the mission of the organization, Mrs Ekechi said, “Our mission is to serve starving poor and those in need in our little and various ways.”
While expressing her gratitude to the church over the award, Mrs Ekechi expressed her deep appreciation to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church Azhayapi FCT Abuja for finding her worthy to win the award.
On her advice to mothers across the Christian community in Nigeria, Mrs Ekechi had this to say. “My simple words for mothers out there is this; Mothers are priceless, multitaskers and superheroes but everyone has a weak point because no one is perfect. Despite all odds and some things being equal, a woman should pray for grace and not loss because it may not always be rosy but with God’s help we can gracefully scale through. Thank you.”
