Tragedy struck in Umuaka once again on Monday 30 August 2021, in one of the brothels in the community known as Achims Hotel which claimed the life of  one Mr Osita Obi, a native of Umuomu Odummara Orodo in Mbaitoli LGA Imo State. As at press time last week, Umuaka Times gathered that there were several versions of what may have killed the Orodo man whose immediate elder sister is the wife of Mr Ozioma Worship, a chieftain of APC in Imo State. If what Umuaka Times gathered from Mr Ozioma Worship is anything to go by, there are some indications that the man in question may have died under seriously suspicious circumstances. Osita Obi who also married from Umuele, according to Ozioma may have been killed in the hotel by some yet to be identified persons.

Ozioma told Umuaka Times that the first story was that Obi was involved in an accident which claimed his life. Another story was that he fell from the staircase in the brothel while the third had it that the man died after a sex romp with a commercial sex worker who is based in Umuaka.

Ozioma’s suspicions were made possible by the contradictory details and versions over the circumstances of the death of the young Orodo man. Ozioma strongly believes that his in-law was murdered in the brother and used the opportunity to call for serious investigation into the matter. According to him, the young man died around 5 pm on Monday 10th August in the evening hours. Ozioma expressed deep shock that the hotel management kept the body of his late in-law in the hotel up till 10 pm on the same day without making any formal report to either the police or any of his family members.

On his suspicion of a foul play in the death of Obi, Ozioma said, “They pushed him through the staircase, an already dead man and it was then that his body sustained some injuries from the tiles.” The reason according to Ozioma for pushing the guy down from the staircase was to make the death look like an accident. Ozioma wondered why the injury on Obi’s body which was sustained when he was pushed down from the staircase, was not bleeding.

Ozioma told Umuaka Times that after several hours the incident occurred, the hotel management took Obi’s body to Santa Maria and Uchechi hospitals respectively where they were told that the man was already dead. Each of the hospitals he was taken to, confirmed him dead on arrival. Ozioma also told Umuaka Times that the hotel management bluntly refused to answer the calls the relations of Osita Obi kept making when they were not hearing from him on the fateful day. According to him, over 70 calls were made and none was answered. “They started to make contacts with the family only when they had tried to dump his body in Uchechi Hospital and abscond that the nurses locked the gate against them.”

Umuaka Times also gathered from Ozioma that the Osita Obi sustained a serious injury on one of his legs. The case as it stands now has been reported at the police in Owerri. The late Osita Obi is survived by two sons and one daughter. The first son is not more than one year old.
