Shocking! Akalites in Ghana have no union.
2 min readIf the fillers Umuaka Times correspondent in Ghana got last week is anything to go by, things are not really fine in Ghana concerning the Akalites who live in the former Gold Coast country of West Africa known as Ghana. From the findings made by Umuaka Times, there is a reasonable number of Akalites doing business in Ghana and a good number of them is also doing very well. According to the reports filed in by the Umuaka Times correspondent in Ghana last week, there is no organization uniting and advancing the unity and welfare of Akalites in the country. The danger this development poses is that anytime any Akalite who lives in Ghana falls into trouble, he will totally be on his own and carry his cross alone.
Umuaka Times further confirmed that in Ghana, there is a union of Imo State indigenes and there is no Akalite who is a member of the union as well. Chief Festus Okwudili Iwuamanam, the Igwe Osinachi 11 of Acharaji-Akah is a prominent Akalite who lives and does business in Ghana, while holding talks with Umuaka Times on the development a few days ago, confirmed that there is a big number of Akalites based in Ghana but “too bad, we don’t have any union that brings us together.” According to him, he had tried in the past to create an Umuaka union in Ghana but it was not successful due to poor coordination. As it stands now, Chief Iwuamanam is seriously in search of likeminded Akalites in Ghana for them to team up and unite Umuaka people in Ghana under one umbrella.
It is on record that many Nigerians are seriously singled out for ill-treatment in Ghana. Many of them today are in Ghanaian prisons while most of them have been deported for committing little or no offences. Writing under the title, Guilty of Being Nigerian in Ghana, Leo Igwe on Guardian of 26 October 2021 put it thus: “The Nigerian government should look into the treatment of Nigerians in Ghana because there are reports of police harassment and extortion from Nigerians in the country. A Ghanaian friend recently shared a Facebook post on some police raids that targeted Nigerians. His post reads: “My apartment has been raided by the Ghana Police 4 times in less than a year. Whatever reason you think for this. It’s worse! The apartment used to be occupied by some Nigerian men who were tired of being harassed by the police”. So many Nigerians in Ghana suffer constant harassment by the police. The harassment has gone on for too long that some are tired. Yes, some Nigerians are tired of being targeted, stopped, arrested by the police in Ghana.”
From indications, it may not be far from the truth that some Akalites are among several Nigerians who are currently languishing in Ghanaian prisons. The need for Akalites in Ghana to unite is so urgent.
