St. Saviour’s College emerges winner of Imo debate competition.
2 min readSt Saviour’s Secondary School located in Amiyi Akah Njaba LGA on Friday 29 November 2024 emerged as the winner of a debate contest organized by Unique-85, a group of old boys association of High School Umuaka that graduated in 1985.
The event which was held at Government College Owerri attracted several students and their teachers from some secondary schools in the State.
The first phase of the debate which was titled, Government Should Ban the Use of Firewood for Cooking in Our Homes saw the debaters from Saint Saviour’s Secondary School Umuaka taking first position and Government College Owerri coming second. Anara Community Secondary School took third position and was dropped from taking part in the second phase of the debate which was title, The Current Minimum Age Qualification for the Office of the President Should Be Reduced.
After hearing the points and submissions of the debaters in the second phase, the panel of judges went to work and came up with their unanimous decision. From the judgment by the panel, Saint Saviour’s Secondary School also emerged as the winners of the second phase of the debate.
By the time the “chief judge” pronounced St Saviour’s Secondary School as the winners of the debate, Umuaka Times observed that the Reverend Father Charles Maduabuchi Anagwo, the principal of the school was full of smiles as he joined hands together with other guests and clapped for the winners.
Several guests who attended the event took time to congratulate and celebrate the winners and encouraged them to maintain the standard. Before the close of the event, all the participants in the debate were given school bags and cash prizes. St Saviour’s Secondary School received the star prize of an award plaque and a cash prize of N200,000. Chief Louis Duru, a one-time commissioner in the state and the anchor of the program disclosed to Umuaka Times that he was initially afraid when he listened to other students from Government College and Anara Community Secondary School. According to him, he thought that the students would floor St Saviours students, “but my confidence was restored when I listened to their first speaker.”
Jubilations and encomiums went high back home in Umuaka when Umuaka Times went on air with the story as breaking news. Several Akalites congratulated the school and her principal for the victory via several whatsapp groups. A royal father from Njaba LGA who did not want his name mentioned while celebrating the victory, commended the students for their successful outing.
