2 min read

Tears flowed freely among family and friends, colleagues and associates and many more as the remains of Mrs Emilia Nnamuka (nee Onwukwe) were last to rest in her home town of Nkwume on Thursday 26 September 2026. The event which attracted several dignitaries both from Umuaka and Nkwume started by 8 a:m when the ambulance conveying the remains of the woman known for her easy going lifestyle touched the family compound of the Nnamukas in Umudim Umueze Nkwume of Njaba LGA Imo State.

Waiting to receive the corpse were the kinsmen and women of Umudim, Christian mothers, Umuaka people and a host of others who came from far and near.

After the ritual of lying in state was conducted, the mourners left for St Michael’s Catholic Church Nkwume where a requiem Mass was celebrated for the repose of her soul. During the Mass, the officiating priest extolled the virtues of the late Mrs Emilia Uchechukwu Nnamuka (locally known as Emunwa in Umuaka) and appealed to the church to always remember her in their daily prayer.

At the close of the requiem Mass, the focus shifted yet again to the Nnamuka family for interment. The choir from St Mary’s Catholic Church Umuaka, youth groups, Umuisii men and women as well as the members of Nigerian Union of Teachers and others, gathered at the graveside for the final prayers which were conducted by the same priest who celebrated the requiem Mass.

After the priest had blessed the tomb, sprinkled holy water on it and offered some funeral prayers, the body of the 58 year old late Mrs Emilia Uchechukwu (Emunwa) Nnamuka was lowered inside the tomb. The priest offered another prayer and called for the closing of the tomb by youths.

As the tomb was being closed, the choir, women groups and family members were still standing and singing songs of sober reflections.

The journey that started 58 years ago had come to an abrupt end, precisely on Thursday September 26, 2024. The late Mrs Emilia Uchechukwu Nnamuka (nee Onwukwe) was survived by a son and a daughter. May her soul continue to rest in peace.
