3 min read

A university don and an expert in Clinical and Developmental Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Imo State University Owerri Imo State, Dr Uche Nnuji has raised an alarm over the “dangerously rising trend of money rituals, which include Yahoo Plus, Okeite, Awele, Okeibubo, and other forms of blood sacrifices, including human sacrifices, in Umuaka and Njaba LGA by “motorcycle boys.” Nnuji disclosed this last week in a press release he issued and made available to Umuaka Times. The Ugbele Akah born social engineering expert complained seriously and bitterly about the involvement of young Akalites in the press statement.

Dr Nnuji described this development as “a disturbing phenomenon that is wreaking havoc on the lives of young individuals, particularly in places like Umuaka Ebeiri. In his words, Nnuji wrote: “The allure of quick riches has led many young boys and girls, some as young as secondary school age, down a treacherous path of destruction and despair. It is crucial to understand that there are no shortcuts to genuine success and prosperity in life.”

On the right path to achieving success in life, Nnuji summed it up thus: “Following the right procedures, adhering to ethical principles, and seeking divine guidance are the keys to a life of sustainable and peaceful prosperity. Engaging in illicit practices like money rituals not only jeopardizes one’s future but also brings about irreversible consequences that can haunt individuals for a lifetime.”

The university don also presented a viable and workable roadmap that will assist the community in dealing with the issue:

Addressing issues related to money rituals, such as those involving motorcycle boys in Umuakah or any other community requires a multi-faceted approach involving various stakeholders. Here are some potential solutions to tackle the problem. He suggested the following solutions:

1. Community Engagement and Awareness: It is essential to raise awareness within the community about the dangers and consequences of engaging in money rituals. Community leaders, religious institutions, schools, and other local organizations can play a crucial role in educating the public about the negative impact of such practices.

2. Law Enforcement and Judicial Action: Authorities should actively investigate and prosecute individuals involved in money rituals and related criminal activities. Law enforcement agencies need to collaborate with the community to gather information, conduct raids on suspected locations, and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable under the law.

3. Youth Empowerment and Skill Development: Providing alternative opportunities for the youth, including vocational training, skill development programs, entrepreneurship initiatives, and access to education, can help steer them away from engaging in criminal activities out of desperation or a desire for quick wealth.

4. Mental Health Support: Some individuals may be drawn to money rituals due to underlying mental health issues, societal pressure, or a lack of support systems. Offering mental health services, counseling, and support networks can help address the root causes of such behaviors and provide individuals with the necessary assistance to make positive life choices.

5. Parental and Family Involvement: Parents and families play a crucial role in guiding and supporting their children. Encouraging open communication, instilling moral values, and monitoring their children’s activities can help prevent them from being lured into criminal activities like money rituals.

6. Collaboration with Traditional and Religious Leaders: Traditional and religious leaders can use their influence and platforms to condemn and discourage harmful practices like money rituals. They can also provide spiritual guidance, counseling, and support to community members who may be at risk of falling into such practices.

7. Media and Public Campaigns: Launching public awareness campaigns through various media channels, including radio, television, social media, and community events, can help disseminate information about the consequences of money rituals and promote positive values and behaviors within the community.

By implementing a combination of these strategies and involving all relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, community leaders, law enforcement, educational institutions, and civil society organizations, it is possible to address the issue of money rituals and promote a safer, more prosperous environment for all members of the community.
