Veteran teacher laments the fallen standard of education.

An Okwudor born retired teacher, educationist, top community leader and Christian father, Nnaoma Vitalis Azike has decried the fallen state of education in Nigeria today and called for urgent interventions both from the public and private sectors. Mr Azike made this call on Wednesday 12 July 2023 during the time some former pupils of Hilltop Primary School Uba Umuaka paid him an appreciation visit in his home town in Okwudor Njaba LGA.

The educationist, who retired as a headmaster in 2010 after meritorious years of service and dedication in the teaching profession, seriously complained that the standard of education has fallen beyond any person’s imagination. He simply disclosed that “the fear is that when the remaining few good and responsible teachers who are still in the field retire, what will education be like?”

The issue of cultism was another social danger the retired teacher complained which requires a prompt intervention. “There are serious allegations from one state to another that cultism has found its way into our primary schools. This is a serious emergency and I call on those in charge to address the issue as soon as possible.”

Mr Azike did not entirely condemn the system, he took exemption on some good teachers, principals, head masters and head mistresses and those in private schools who teach with the love of God and take the pupils and students as their own biological children. He prayed to God to continue to guide and bless those ones and their subjects as well.

While addressing the issue of fallen and falling standard of education, he appealed to parents to also monitor their children and discourage them from investing their time, energy and talents in “Yahoo-Yahoo” dirty deals. Mr Azike strongly expressed his optimism that with the right people on board and right policies, education in Nigeria will take back its exulted position.
