2 min read

The Headmaster of Hilltop Primary School Uba Umuaka, Chief Stephen Onyema Nwachukwu has raised an alarm over what he described as an embarrassing emergency at the school and called for an urgent intervention from the host community. Umuaka Times paid an official visit to the school last week and engaged the headmaster when he disclosed this and conducted Umuaka Times round the school.

From what the headmaster disclosed to Umuaka Times, erosion is the biggest threat to the lives of the pupils of the great institution which has 630 pupils. The cause of the erosion which floods the backyard compound of the school is because of the drainage system that has been blocked. “Children find it very difficult to play or move about freely because of the flooding of the compound,” the headmaster told Umuaka Times.

The school headmaster expressed fears that if something was not done urgently to fight the erosion, the school children may soon be infected by one ailment or another.

Another problem Umuaka Times gathered that is confronting the primary school is the problem of insecurity. The headmaster seriously complained to Umuaka Times that from time to time, buglers break their way into the school and steal chairs and other valuables. Umuaka Times gathered that even his office was not spared as the buglers stole the iron door leading to the office sometime ago. In his words, the headmaster told Umuaka Times that “criminals come and steal from here. Children carry their chairs to the library daily before the start of school and at the closure to avoid being stolen.”

Other problems the school is facing is that each class is about 70 or more pupils manned by one teacher. The school has a total of 10 teachers including the headmaster who teach, control and look after 630 pupils. He described the job as too tasking for him and the remaining 9 teachers.

Water crisis is another challenge the school is contending with. Children find it very hard to get drinking water during school hours unless when they have money to buy sachet water. In all the problems the headmaster discussed with Umuaka Times, to make Hilltop Primary School Umuaka to regain its academic and social vibrancy once again, the school needs 7 more teachers, especially PTA teachers as the government is no longer employing new teachers, according to some sources that spoke to Umuaka Times. 3 security men at night and 2 during the day time, effective water supply and a total control of the flooding that has occupied a better part of the school compound.

Chief Stephen Onyema Nwachukwu, the headmaster of the school who is also known as Njaba Number 1 Professor, (Oka Mmuta Nke Mbu na Njaba) appealed to the host community of the school to run to the aid of the school as soon as possible.
