Sunday August 5, 2023 was indeed a black Sunday in Amakor community of Umuaka Municipal Council, Njaba LGA Imo State. Before this tragic day, a lot of mysterious things was spotted in Amakor and people of the community were indeed worried and were out to seek a solution. They indeed did their best in finding a lasting solution to their “communal” problems but the event of Sunday August 5 delivered a fatalistic diversion of attention of the community and threw the entire town into a long and unforgettable period of mourning. A promising Amakor son, Mr Oluchi Ukarika, known as Arthur One Hand, his wife, three children and a house help were crushed to death by a reckless driver whom eye witnesses claimed was driving against traffic.

According to the facts Umuaka Times gathered, the absolutely sad incident took place at the junction known as Umudibia Community Maternity Junction, a stone throw to the Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri, the capital city of Imo State.

For those who did not know, Oluchi Ukarika also known was a silver medalist under Para-badminton games. Highly dependable sources disclosed to Umuaka Times that he was to represent Nigeria in Para-badminton games in the United States of America just few days after the accident, thereby bringing to an abrupt end a fantastic dream of a young man to represent his country.

According to some eye witnesses who spoke to journalists after the incident, Arthur was on a motorcycle with some of his children after the close of work on their way to home. There were also two other motorcyclists who were carrying his wife, two children and their house help when the tragic incident took place. Umuaka Times gathered that Arthur and their last born who was barely a year plus, died instantly while his wife, the house help and two of his children were said to have died in one of the hospitals in Owerri where they were rushed to by sympathizers.

Contrary to what people believed which held that the break system of an oncoming trailer malfunctioned and the driver lost control and killed Arthur and his entire family, the vehicle that actually killed the entire Arthur family was a Lexus RX 3:30 SUV which someone seriously believed to be drunk borrowed from the owner to run an errand at the Holy Family junction Poly Nekede. Sources that spoke to Umuaka Times claimed that the reckless driver had already run his errand and was returning home before he lost control of the vehicle due to over speeding and rammed into the Arthur family.

From a newspaper report Umuaka Times came across last week, “He left his right lane and rammed into Arthur and family. Arthur was carrying his wife and his last born (daughter) of one year and two months on his red Windy Motorbike, whereas another bike was carrying his maid and two boys of about 7 and 5 years. He died on the spot with his first child whereas the wife, baby, second child, house help and the bike man died at FMC Owerri,”

Back home in Amakor community and the entire Umuaka town, it was like the world had come to an end on the fateful Sunday morning. Words got to Amakor youths and several Amakor whatsapp groups over the tragic incident less than an hour the ugly incident took place. Uncontrollable tears and wailings took over the entire community. The police authorities in the state have since taken over the case for investigations.

During his lifetime, Arthur represented his fatherland both in and outside Nigeria on badminton games for disabled men.
