Half loafs of bread for sale as Nigerians battle hunger.

2 min read

Last week, Umuaka people, Ndi Igbo and other Nigerians were shocked that supermarkets in the country now sell half loafs of bread as many Nigerians are no longer able to afford a full size loaf of bread. Many who read the post from the social media could not accommodate the development as they wondered where the country was headed to. The pain behind the half loaf of bread is by no way a relief as the half loaf of bread is still very costly for many to afford. A half loaf of bread is sold about N800 or more depending on the size.

Umuaka Times went into town to make further inquiries and the results were shocking. A bottle of coke which is nearing N1000 in some places can now be sold in two half bottles as many can no longer afford a full bottle. Findings also show that some restaurants now sell only soup while others sell the soup when someone makes a demand for extra soup.

Another staple seasonal food item which many no longer afford is corn. Roadside corn roasters now break full corns into 3 or 4 equal parts depending on the size of the corn and sell them to their customers at the rate of N300 each.

From a highly dependable source Umuaka Times came across during the research for this news item, it reports that “in 2024, an estimated 26.5 million Nigerians face acute food insecurity, a significant increase from 18.6 million in 2023. This situation is projected to worsen, with a new assessment predicting that 33 million people will face food insecurity during the 2025 lean season. Specifically, 1.8 million children are at risk of severe acute malnutrition.”

The report concludes thus: “Nigeria hunger statistics for 2021 was 15.90%, a 1.7% increase from 2020. Nigeria hunger statistics for 2020 was 14.20%, a 1.8% increase from 2019. Nigeria hunger statistics for 2019 was 12.40%, a 1.8% increase from 2018. Nigeria hunger statistics for 2018 was 10.60%, a 0.5% increase from 2017.”

Many who could no longer have the patience for the satanic rise in the prices of food items in Nigeria called for the government to throw in the towel as they have totally failed.
