Last week, 7 young lawyers from Umuaka were called to bar after completing their law degree programs at various universities in Nigeria. Each of the young lawyers spoke exclusively with Umuaka Times.

Excerpts:

My name is Miss Oluchi Maria Onumara. I am from UgbeleAkah Autonomous Community. My academic journey started at St. Juliana’s Nursery and Primary School, Owerri, Imo State. After that I went to Holy Rosary International College, Owerri, Imo State.

When I was through with my secondary school, I gained admission at Abia State University where I read law. My law school was in Abuja and it was there that I was called to bar on 9th July 2025.

I was drawn to law because I believe law can be a powerful tool for creating positive change and protecting individual rights. Would I like to practice law or join the bench? I am more inclined to practice law than join the Bench.

How was my Journey like? It was unlike anything I anticipated. The hurdles and challenges made me emerge into the person I am today. The experience was worth it and I would do it again.

I like to advise young Akalites that law is a constantly evolving field; one has to stay curious and keep learning. Be prepared to work hard, but also prioritize self-care. Always do not forget to put God first!

On my vote of thanks, I’m grateful to God for His guidance and presence. Thank you to my parents for their unwavering support and sacrifices. To my siblings, family, and friends, I appreciate your love and encouragement. May the mantle passed on to me continue to burn brightly, guiding me to make a positive impact.
