9A Nigerian priest of Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Angelo Chidi Unegbu has frowned at the men of God who keep on making the people believe that the socio-economic problems of the country are spiritual and therefore need spiritual solutions. Citing an instance that the highest paid Youtube influencer in the country is a messenger who tells others that what God cannot do does not exist, those who are using political power to torment the people will continue to do so and laugh at the people. “As long as we believe our socio-economic problems are spiritual, those responsible for our suffering will continue to laugh at us,” the young priest wrote on his Facebook account.

Continuing on his sermon, the priest wrote, “Nigeria’s highest-earning YouTuber isn’t a social activist, an artist, a teacher, a craftsman, or someone who teaches people how to be successful, but rather someone who tells them that what God cannot do does not exist. As long as we believe that our socioeconomic problems are spiritual in nature, those responsible for our suffering will continue to laugh at us.” he wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.

Rev. Fr. Angelo Chidi Unegbu seriously lamented that the country which is a multi-cultural society is seriously battling with high level of social vices, crimes and sexual immorality. He therefore wondered if the country can be described as a religious society. To support his position, he cited the following example: “The purpose of religion in general is to protect the right to life and human dignity; to promote truth-telling, mutual respect, sexual morality (in most religions), peace, development, and social cohesion; to combat greed, envy, slander, and theft; and to give meaning and purpose to life and existence. Nigeria today is the second most prayerful country on earth after Afghanistan, yet it lacks almost all of the above,”

While concluding his sermon, Father Unegbu, asked:

“How can a people be prayerful but lack all the attributes of a religious people? We are too selfish. We seek shortcuts everywhere. We only detest corruption when we do not benefit from it. We hate due process. We don’t want to hear of teamwork, yet we want to be successful. The sooner we stop fooling ourselves, the better for us.”

In the last few years, several men of God in the country especially the high profile ones have come under heavy attacks both from the pulpits and from the social media. The lavish lifestyles of such men, their insatiable tastes in flaunting their wealth and unending requests for tithes and first fruits from members collectively sparked up the attacks.
