2 min read

High profile Akalite and top community leader, Cletus Chukwuemeka Orisakwe, Ugogbuzuo 1 of Isiozi-Akah has appealed to Nigerian authorities to review the boarding school system for both secondary and post secondary schools across the country. This call was made in view of the rise of violence and killings going on in Nigeria boarding schools and other institutions. Chief Orisakwe was reacting to what he described as an unfortunate incident which took place at Bowen College Lagos where a student, Sylvester Oromoni was allegedly killed by his fellow students as a result of bullying.

Chief Orisakwe made this call while reacting to the debate on the death of the student by the “students” of Umuaka Times Institute UTI. “This unfortunate case of a student, (Sylvester Oromoni) who was killed by his fellow students, calls for review of boarding schools system in the country. Stories abound where students were killed in mysterious circumstances while in school. These ugly trends have prompted many to call for scrapping of the boarding school system.”

On the suggestion by many to scrap the boarding school system, Chief Orisakwe  was of the view that the system should still be maintained but went further to appeal to the relevant authorities to review the program because in his own views, “the benefits outweigh its disadvantages.”

He further explains that a “situation where the parents are living outside the child’s school environment, demands that the child should be sent to a boarding school for uninterrupted training programs.” Despite his advocacy to retain the system, Chief Orisakwe calls for the scrapping of the following segments in the school boarding system. In his own words, he wrote:

However, to minimize the incidence of cultism and cult related deaths and  crimes, the school authorities should BAN the following activities:

  1. No student should be allowed to bring into the school food items from outside 2. Students should not be allowed to group, unless for approved school activities. 3. Students who wear dresses with designs contrary to the school uniform or day dresses, should not be allowed into the school premises. 4. Parents should not be allowed to visit their wards, except on visiting days, nor bring any food items to their children during the official visits. 5.The school authorities should not allow any student to leave the school for elsewhere, without express permission from the school authorities.

On how to establish these rules and maintain them, Chief Orisakwe advocated the need for each school to “institute a system of monitoring of the students activities in the school.” He finally appeals to the government to severely deal with any boarding school that fails to implement these set of rules. “Failing to take such proactive measures, the school should be held accountable for any cult related murder or crime in the institution.”
