Friday 20 May 2022, was a great day in in Umuowa town, one of the communities in Orlu Senatorial Zone Imo State. On this eventful day, citizens of Orlu, both in Nigeria and Diaspora, the clergy, health officials and a cross section of other stakeholders gathered at the premises of Merit College of Nursing Sciences (www. www.meritcollegeorlu.org) for the grand opening and commissioning of the school.

When Umuaka Times arrived at the venue of the event, the Catholic Bishop of Orlu Diocese who dedicated the institution to God had arrived. Also present were several personalities including the premier Provost of the health institution, Lolo Angela Ikeme who briefed Umuaka Times on the need for the school. In her brief interview with Umuaka Times, she disclosed that the school was opened in Orlu because there was not enough educational institution in Orlu zone. She went further and informed Umuaka Times that the new school has the capacity to train nurses to challenge their counterparts from developed countries. Confirmations emerged last week that the school had already enrolled about 100 students.

Umuaka Times had an opportunity to speak with one of the students who displayed her deep joy over the manner and effective response their admissions were processed by the institution. According to her, there was no corner-cutting or request for illegal fees before admissions were offered to them. “As the name implies, Merit College of Nursing Sciences gives admissions absolutely based on merit. The moment you provide your 5 credits and JAMB result, you will automatically be given an admission.”

During the ground opening of the institution last week, many people from Umuaka Municipal Council were in attendance to grace the event. Each of them expressed deep satisfaction towards the plan of those who provided the institution to train Orlu youths in health sciences. The Merit School of Health Sciences is a private enterprise of Chief Nkemdirim and Lolo Chika Ugbaja of Amiyi Akah Autonomous Community in Njaba LGA Imo State.
