Daryl Dike, the Nigerian-American football star and a high profile Akalite, has completed a highly anticipated return to his first professional club, Orlando City SC, after securing a new contract with the Major League Soccer side shortly after leaving his former club in the United Kingdom, West Bromwich Albion. Umuaka Times correspondents in the United States report that the 26-year-old striker officially returned to Orlando City on July 17, 2026, signing as a free agent after his contract with West Bromwich Albion expired.
The move represents a remarkable homecoming for Dike, who originally joined Orlando City after being selected as the fifth overall pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. He went on to establish himself as one of the club’s most promising attacking players before moving to England. Orlando City confirmed that Dike’s new contract will run through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with the club holding an option for the 2027–28 season. The club however did not disclose Dike’s personal salary or guaranteed compensation for the contract.
Dike’s return to Orlando came only a short time after his departure from West Bromwich Albion, where he spent more than four years after moving to England in 2022. His time at West Brom was disrupted by injuries, limiting his opportunities and preventing him from reproducing the impressive form that had made him one of Orlando City’s most sought-after young forwards.Reuters reported that Dike’s West Brom contract expired during the summer of 2026, making him a free agent. He subsequently secured his return to Orlando City, completing the move on July 17. The timing of the deal has attracted considerable attention, particularly because Dike did not remain without a club for long after leaving England.
Although Dike joined Orlando as a free agent, the MLS structure required Orlando City to reach an agreement with Seattle Sounders FC because Seattle held Dike’s Discovery Priority. Orlando City therefore sent $75,000 in 2027 General Allocation Money (GAM) to Seattle for Dike’s Discovery Priority. Umuaka Times gathered that Seattle could receive another $75,000 in GAM if Dike meets certain performance-based conditions. The payment was not Dike’s salary; his personal financial terms with Orlando City were not been publicly disclosed.
Orlando City General Manager and Sporting Director Ricardo Moreira welcomed the striker’s return, describing him as a player well known to the club and its supporters. Moreira said the club was “very excited to welcome him back to Orlando,” highlighting Dike’s strength, speed and physical presence. According to Moreira, Dike’s ability to hold up the ball, bring teammates into the attack and finish chances gives Orlando City another important attacking option. The enthusiasm from the club reflects the strong impression Dike made during his first spell in Central Florida.
Before leaving for England, Dike made 41 appearances across all competitions for Orlando City, starting 33 of those matches and scoring 19 goals with seven assists. His 2021 campaign was particularly impressive, as he led Orlando City with 11 goals. He subsequently spent time on loan with English club Barnsley before making his permanent move to West Bromwich Albion. His performances at Barnsley helped attract attention in England and ultimately paved the way for his move to West Brom.
Dike’s career in England did not develop as smoothly as many expected. He joined West Bromwich Albion after leaving Orlando City in 2022, but recurring injuries, including serious Achilles problems, affected his progress. Now, Dike is in form and shape and ready to display the skills he is known for in the field of soccer.Despite the difficulties, Dike has described his time in England as an important period of personal and football development. He said moving to another country at a young age exposed him to different styles of football, people and expectations and taught him the importance of adaptability.
Following his return, Dike expressed deep happiness about being back in Orlando. Speaking to Orlando City, he said:
“I’m super happy to be here.”
He explained that Orlando was where his professional career began and where the club first gave him the opportunity to play professionally. According to Dike, Orlando “felt like home” during his first spell, and returning to the club has brought back the same feeling. He added that he was excited when he received the call informing him of Orlando City’s interest and said he “couldn’t be happier” to be back.
Dike also explained that one of his major motivations for returning was his desire to regain the happiness he associated with playing football. He recalled enjoying his football particularly during his first period in Orlando and said that happiness is important because it can translate into better performances on the field. For him, the Orlando City deal represents more than another professional contract; it is an opportunity to restart his career in familiar surroundings after a difficult period in England. At 26, the powerful forward now has the chance to rebuild his reputation in MLS, where his career first took off. The club, meanwhile, is hoping that a healthy and confident Dike can provide additional firepower to its attack.
