Wednesday 30 August 2023 was indeed a bad day in Africa as one of her most illustrious sons, the Egyptian born British based billionaire businessman, Mohamed Al Fayed passed on. Mohamed Al Fayed, former Harrods and Fulham Football Club owner died at the age of 94.

The businessman whose business interests cut across several spheres of investments was also the owner of the Ritz Hotel in Paris among other business interests. According to a document the London correspondent of Umuaka Times obtained last week, “Mrs Mohamed Al Fayed, her children and grandchildren wish to confirm that her beloved husband, their father and their grandfather, Mohamed, has passed away peacefully of old age on Wednesday August 30, 2023.”

During his lifetime, Al Fayed was a successful businessman whose business interests in the whole of UK rang bells. He achieved a lot in business but was never given a British citizenship. Another document Umuaka Times obtained claimed that, “Al-Fayed’s application for British citizenship was denied by the government in 1995. He said racism kept him on the fringe of acceptability. A year earlier, al-Fayed had embarrassed the government by disclosing that he had made gifts and payments to politicians in return for them asking parliamentary questions for him.”

Before Al Fayed moved to Britain to extend his business interests, he had first built a successful business empire in the Middle East. Perhaps the two greatest shocks Al Fayed got in Britain in his lifetime was the refusal of the British government to grant him British citizenship. Another shock which was perhaps the biggest was the controversial death of his only son Dodi Al Fayed who was killed in a motoring accident in Paris on 31 August 1997 alongside his girlfriend, Lady Diana the Princess of Wales.

Close associates of Mohammed Al Fayed strongly believed that the former Harrods boss may have indeed “died” on the day his only son Dodi Al Fayed was killed. The death of Dodi, totally devastated his father Mohammed Al Fayed and the entire family. Till his death was announced last week, the business tycoon kept searching for answers for the death of his son till he died. Umuaka Times gathered that the death of Dodi Al Fayed forced Mohammed Al Fayed to privately confine himself and his wife Heini, in their Surrey Mansion for years.

As at press time late last week, several football managers, football club owners and players had sent in their condolence messages to the family left behind by the businessman.
