The story of Umuaka in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State is increasingly becoming a story of academic excellence, determination and the triumph of the human spirit. In recent years, a remarkable generation of young lawyers from the community has distinguished itself by achieving First Class Honours in Law from some of the most respected universities in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Their achievements represent not only personal victories but also a powerful testimony to the value of education, discipline, resilience and unwavering commitment to excellence.

These young legal minds have shown that greatness is not determined by one’s background or place of origin, but by vision, hard work and the courage to pursue excellence. They came, they saw, and they conquered.

Miss Nwamba Mercy Ngozi

Among these outstanding scholars is Miss Nwamba Mercy Ngozi from Umuele, whose academic journey reflects perseverance and determination. Mercy began her education at State Primary School, UmueleAmazano, where she attended from nursery to Primary 3, before continuing at Inland Primary School, Ibele, from Primary 4 to Primary 6. She later proceeded to Girls’ Secondary Technical School, Umuaka, for her Junior Secondary education and completed her Senior Secondary education at Living Stone Christian Academy, Aba, Abia State.

Her dream of becoming a lawyer became a reality when she gained admission into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to study law. Despite the challenges of university life, including two ASUU strikes that affected academic schedules, Mercy remained focused and determined. After completing her law degree, she proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Port Harcourt Campus.

Her success in law stands as an inspiration to young girls in Umuaka and beyond. Her message to aspiring lawyers is simple but powerful: believe that it is possible, work hard, remain committed, pray and give education the seriousness it deserves.

According to Mercy, young girls should understand that a law degree is within their reach. She encourages students to avoid distractions, remain focused, read extensively and give their studies their best effort. Her journey proves that dedication and perseverance can transform dreams into reality. Mercy is armed with First Class Honours in law from the UNN.

Mr Kingsley Duru
Another shining example is Mr Kingsley Duru who hails from UbaUmuaka. The Leeds University-trained law graduate established some achievements that brought honour to Umuaka as well. A co-winner of the 2021 Umuaka Times Best Student of the Year Award, Kingsley has continued to demonstrate exceptional leadership and academic excellence.

His outstanding contributions to the university community earned him nomination to the prestigious Leeds University School of Law Advisory Board. His nomination recognized his role in promoting diversity, inclusion and student engagement during his time as President of the Law Society.

The advisory board, made up of only 15 members at a time, includes distinguished personalities such as senior legal professionals, former government officials, city lawyers, in-house lawyers and consultants. As the youngest member of the board, Kingsley described the opportunity as a chance to “stand on the shoulders of giants” while contributing to strategic discussions shaping the future of legal education.

His achievement demonstrates that Umuaka’s young lawyers are not only excelling academically but are also earning recognition for leadership, innovation and service within some of the world’s most respected academic institutions. Kingsley is armed with a First Class honours from Leeds University.
